I have the opportunity to go to dayshift. I will still be in a supervisor position, but will have to deal with every wanna be chief. As it is, I rarely see any of them unless crap hits the fan. I don't care much for dealing with admin people. I pretty much have it made on nights and are not bother by supervisors.
My wife says its my choice. The long 12 hour night shifts are getting tougher on the old body, but I don't have the headache the dayshift has. Things have been good for the last 5 years. Don't want to jinx myself.
What are your opinions on days vs nights? Thanks, Sarge

A family friend is 75 years old and worked nights for the last 30 years for the reasons you said no admin people to bother you and it is a little slower pace, plus he has most of the day to do personal business.

I'm a 12hr day shifter. Your reason is what I hear from many guys on the night shift. It would take a lot to get me to go back to nights. I have no problem with admin overwatching me, I believe I know and do my job well. I end up getting observed at least once every 3-4 months, cant think of any time there was ever a problem with me. Maybe something in the process they determin needs changing, but most processes by me change often enough because there is always someone who thinks they can make it better.

Had a guy on my shift move back to nights about a year ago. Said he was gonna take it easy till he retired. He is way more relaxed, but he was always worried about management watching him. He knew his job, had a lot of experiance, just was the kind of person that worried about stuff like that.

Not worried about my job performance. Just don't like dealing with college and wanna be chiefs. Dayshift admin tend to get butt hurt too easily if you tell them no. I have to tell folks with 8 and 12 year degrees no at times and they pout. I tend to be very straight forward with folks and they get (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman). But its my job to keep folks safe and I must be doing something right. May not be well liked or in the gossip corner, but respected for doing my job. Sarge

Sounds like night shift would be a better fit.

What pays more and allows for more trapping time?

How many more years are you planning to work? How often will the offer come up again if at all? Sometimes changes work out better than one thinks they will. A lot sounds like it is up to you and your mind set. If you feel that having the buzzards circling you will be a negative thing then it may very well be and you will make it fit your expectations. If you decide to go days and don't like it can you quickly and easily go back to nights.

What are the personal non work related advantages or disadvantages of either shift?

Bryce

First and formost what is best for your family ? Relationship with your wife? Kids? I think this is a joint decision between you and your wife, does night shift allow you to work and maintain a healthy family life? Would day shift make it any better ?
Im lucky i have a boss that believes family is always first. And it makes life and choices much eaiser at times.

Good luck

I plan on working another 10 years.Technically I work only 14 nights per month vs 16 on days. As far as trapping, it works well with 48 hour adc beaver checks. I like hunting and trapping when other folks are at work. As far as the home front, wife is ok with it. The kids are grown and moved away. I still manage 3 weeks of vacation per year.
I might be able to retire sooner if my cannabis stocks improve in the next 3-5 years. LOL . Sarge

I changed to days the last 10 years I worked it was really tough for the first two years to adjust then I really like it ,got to start doing things with my wife ,like going to events , party or just sleeping before I switch she would go by her self ,just had a friend switch to days from nights , always said he would never do it an a year later he love its you cant get the stuff done on day shift like you would on nights ,not enough time ,days shift project take longer to complete
