We are ready to do some inside painting and do most of you tape all the casing/trim work?

For decades I never tried it as I thought it was too time consuming. Tried it and use it all the time now. Slow learner.

They sell, or you can make an edging tool that you just slide along the molding to protect the wall.

50/50 here. I tape all trim that is stained or not smooth due to being a pain to clean if I smear it .... use an edger on most trim that is painted/smooth cause its easier to clean...

Using tape around moldings will never make you a good 'cutter'. Only time I use tape is on stained/poly'd baseboards, keeps the little falling droplets from marking them up.
People who tape woodwork rarely cut a neat wall to ceiling line.

Get a good brush, an angled Wooster Pro is what I use. Thin your paint a bit so it flows easily and in a thin coat. Use the edge of a 5 IN 1 or spackle knife to remove the little you might get on the wood.

My wife does the edging. I’m not as good as she is so I tape. It keeps the marriage intact.
