If you ever smelled castor from North Dakota bvr that only have cattails and a few scrub trees you will appreciate aspen bvr castor which smells sweet. The North Dakota castor smells like sewer. i couldnt believe it but kept it seperate. Dont know if i will ever use it, possibly. Absolutly true! I trapped beav in Wy one spring out on the prairie. Absolutely the worst beaver I have ever caught, and didn't bother with the castor. Real yellow and actually stank, and the size of spring rat glands. Never did that again!

Paul,
One of the links you posted to one of your ‘ride alongs’ mentions that NC imported WI beaver. You said that you can tell the difference because they still build the feed pile and the fur is better. I find this very interesting.
Why would NC (or any state) import beaver from anywhere?
About the fur quality…are you speaking of the fur color? Or the fur density? I would think that the color would stay but the under fur would never really develop enough to allow shearing due to NC’s climate??
They got the WI beaver via PA through some sort of trade back in the 60's, from what I understand. The beaver population in NC at that time was nil. The WI beaver here has thick long luxurious fur with dense underfur compared to the southern beavers that were imported. There's a huge difference in the quality. The WI beavers here still retain that better quality fur, even after being here 50 years. Some of the beavers I caught had a white spot anywhere from the size of a dime to the size of a dollar bill on their underside. I've heard from WI trappers who have caught beavers up there with similar markings.

What are you up to now? Mr.Paul Dobbins. Conventions? Next week I'll start my final two weeks of beaver'n for the summer. I'm supposed to trap them from Oct 1 through Jun 30, but I had conventions the last two weeks in June. I'll make up those two weeks starting on Monday. Then I'll head to MI for their convention in Evart the weekend of Aug 16/17.

Paul,
I’ve noticed the white spot on the belly but in my area it’s far from common. I’ve only caught two...the first one I tanned! I find it amazing that transplanted WI hold their fur quality despite the vastly different climate! They don't all have that white spot, very few have it. I've probably caught 20 or so of them with the white patches out of the thousands I've caught down here.

Some beaver build lodges here, a lot just den in the banks. BTW it was finally good to meet you face to face in Springfield. Mike

Most of our Oregon beaver don't build lodges, and most of the ones I catch on the lakes and big rivers don't build dams either.
