Not familiar with boat engines in particular, but an engine's an engine, they all work the same. When it has problems not starting, you need to check for spark first. Go to the auto parts staore and get a spark tester, it's just a metal doodad that you plug into the spark plug wire and clip to some metal on the engine. It has a large gap so you can watch the spark as you crank the engine over. If you have a good looking blue-ish spark that makes a nice snapping sound, then your problem is on the fuel side. Your best bet is to just replace the carb, but if you can find a rebuild kit, you could go that route if you're interested in some more frustration. They're not too bad, just take your time, don't lose stuff, and follow directions and make sure your have directions for how to get it adjusted afterwards.
If you have no spark, you need to do a little more digging. I'm not sure how boat ignitions work exactly, but it's safe to guess it's got points on it. "points" refers to a little device that has two electronic contact points that open and close an electrical circuit to create a spark. They wear out over time, and have to be replaced. They're usually pretty cheap, and not too bad to install and adjust properly, but you'll want a manual. If that doesn't take care of a no-spark issue, you're looking at things like a coil/magneto, plug wire, spark timing issue, loss of compression, etc and it gets a little more technical.

If you dont know what points capaciter magneto or reed valve are you need to find someone who does. Boco gave you good advice

You probably need to rebuild the carb.

You said you had spark on only one plug. Suspect you might have a bad plug wire. I would replace both plug wires but you will most likely still have problems with dried out diaphragm in the carb.

I’m madder than heck right now but slowly cooling down.

Motor will run for a second or two then nothing for the next 30 pulls. I did get it running for a minute or two and shut it off on my own. But not having luck getting it going again.

Sound like a fuel issue to you guys?

I just put new spark plugs in and cleaned the carb and checked the fuel filter.

Anyone think they know what could be the issue? I have all the ambition in the world to get this thing running good.

The guy I bought it from couldn’t get it running at all. I atleast got it to run, but not for very long.

Buying a 50yo boat motor and expecting it to run was your first mistake.

THose older 6hp evinrude/johnsons are bulletproof. Once you get it running right it will be a good reliable little motor for a long time. It's usually something small and once you get it fixed, away you go.

if you pump the ball up hard then start and get to run for a short time if you keep pumping the ball can you keep it running?

spark checked?

compression checked?

is the cylinder wet with fuel/oil when you pulled the plug?

if you use a squeeze bottle and some mixed fuel and put a little squirt in the cylinder then put plug back in and start will it run for a bit?

if you put a little squirt in the carb and pull will it run for bit ?

air leaks in old fuel hoses and couplings are often an issue on these old motors .

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

The coils are always bad in breaking down you can see some excrusion on the bottom windings there lies the problem.

Is there sentimental value in that motor.

Is it the one you went out fishing with dad ,,,,and came home with mom ?

Don't think about using it in the Red River at Lockport because the gates are open and flowing PDQ for even 16 footers to be in the current.

Hoping that will be the problem.

Not a boat motor guy but I have a couple vintage snowmobiles and if they sit around for a time there’s always a set of points that won’t fire, my guess is you need to clean the points..that would be my first step
before moving into any other part of the ignition system..easy fix

Once you get spark on both plugs, remove your float bowl drain screw on your carb and drain the fuel
let it run out for a few..the float bowl holds fuel and all that old gas is not going to fire..myself I’d just remove the fuel bowl and clean everything that way but that’s up to you..

That’s kinda the impression I have as well and why I went with it.

I have no sentimental attachment to the motor. I bought it from some guy for $45. He told me it ran good for 2 years that he had it then stored it for 2 years with no use, and wouldn’t start now when I went to pick it up. I figured it would be just a dirty carb so no big deal. I’ve cleaned 5-6 carbs the last 2 years so I understand how they work and feel comfortable cleaning them myself.

I’m going to try taking the flywheel off this weekend if I have time and check the points and see if I can find out why the one spark plug isn’t sparking.

Some of you quitters would probably take it to the engine repair shop. Too scared to get your hands dirty. Around here I don’t call 911, I am 911.

Those are good motors but I have had to replace coils on them before. Maybe trying swapping coils and plug wires and see if the "other" cylinder will have spark to try to narrow down the problem.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I had a few minute of spare time so I took the flywheel off and things look cleaner than I was expecting. Whatever those orange plastic things are they are cracked. Not sure if those contribute to giving spark or not.
Condensers look good, nothing leaking.
Points look very clean, maybe new? I plan on measuring them later on.

Those should be the coils if I remember correctly.

I would disagree, kind of. I have a four stroke 9.9 that thing will run like a top when it wants to but when it dont it just dont at all. I can take a 2 stroke that's been laying in the weeds out back and clean then carb, make sure it has fire fuel and air and get that thing to running. I have found with the 9.9 that if it quits running better just put another carb on it. I have 3 I keep on hand when one gets all jacked up I just rebuild and put another one on. A 2 stroke is way easier to work on for me.
