My opinion..motels or hotels. We have a motor home and are going to get rid of it.Maintainance,,winterizing,,finding a place to park it.Just jump in the car and go.Hotels along the way are easy and no headaches.

I think it depends on what type of travelling you are doing.Moving daily or having one destination for a longer period. Also, old people hauling big campers are a hazard on the highway.

Use Airbnb/VRBO. It's typically cheaper than a hotel, sometimes by a lot. If you just need a place to sleep for the night while traveling, you can usually find someone's spare bedroom for like $40. If you're actually staying somewhere, you can get a place with a kitchen and cook all your meals instead of eating out and save money that way. Also, Airbnb/VRBOs are usually more interesting places, not just a giant rectangular building in downtown wherever. We've stayed in a cabin on a horse ranch on top of the Colorado national monument, for example. Our first place was a cabin with electricity and a kitchen and wood stove for heat and two bedrooms in Missouri, it cost something like $50 a night, super cheap. We've also stayed in random people's spare bedrooms for less than that.
Later this month my wife and I will be staying in an Airbnb in santa fe, it's costing us like $70 a night, it's two bedrooms, a kitchen, private laundry, so we're saving a lot.

I've been pulling a camper around since 1988. For me it is the only way to travel. Just use you imagination and you will see the many advantages. My trips are generally <1500 miles and I'll go somewhere and then camp for a week to several months. Example, travel to FL for Jan - Apr. When traveling to and from I just park overnight in one of the many places that I can park for no charge example, road side rests, Walmart, Cabela's, Cracker Barrel. Don't ask for advice from people that haven't been pulling a camper and don't get bigger than you need. Boco is right those Canadians. When headed south in the winter in their big motor homes or pulling a big 5th wheel they should not be allowed on the road. In my camper I have everything I need lots more than you could every take in a car or truck. Can't imagine why anyone would want to stay in some bug infested motel or worse yet someone's spare room. Just consider this, if campers were not a good thing would you see lots of them on the highways? Jan in FL, getting ready for a three month stay.

Boco I have what you are talking about but where do you draw the line. We call them Snow Birds here long the coast. But I do know some that store their campers here for the summer and fly back.

My Sis and BiL live in the lowlands of Phoenix and when it starts getting hot, (March) they load up the beast and head for the mountains, and don't come home till Oct! They love it, staying at National Parks etc. The beast cost plenty, and the maintenance ain't cheap, but it's just like being at home. They started out with a drive it, but went to a 5th wheel, much simpler for side trips, leave the beast and drive the truck, so you don't have to drag something behind.

If it were me, I'd go with a camper.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Hey ebsurveyer Tell me about that utv to the left of the cook. just Don't know anything about it except, some rich guy from MN pulls it behind his $1,000,000+ motor home & it goes like - That photo is from Sparta IL home of the Grand American. Also, What is this work and maintenance you guys talk about? When I finished for the year I just call the dealer and he comes and gets it. When I need it again he brings it back all cleaned and polished. Also, I trade them off every three or four years and about all I need to do is fill the propane bottles and dump the holding tanks. No motel can compare to the comfort of my own bed in my own "house".
