About 7 years ago I had this thing given to me. The old owner could not get it running and said If I got it started I could keep it. Cleaned the carb and did doughnuts in the marina parking lot an hour later. The thing was that the old B&S was pretty tired. The kids played with it for a few years in PA and killed it. So it sat there in the corner of the garage. Now that I bought the property in TN and need something to pull some wood out of the brush there and as a general runaround. I went and brought it down to SC for a heart transplant. Instead of the old B&S it now has a 670cc V twin Predator in it with probably twice the horses the old B&S had. Should do me fine for drawing fire wood to the house and lumber out of the tight spots to get it where I can work on it.

Are they still all chain drive?

It has a variable belt drive from the engine to the transmission. And from there its all chains to the wheels. I have changed the variable belt drive a little bit and put a limiter in it, that gives me more torque and less speed. I don't see the point in running around at the best part of 40 mp/h ... I need it to be able to pull stuff and get up steep inclines.

I can't imagine what it would cost to put new tires on that machine. I know they're nice machines but the maintenance costs would tend to be on the high side.

Had an outfit similar to that back in the late 80's and figured it was God's gift to a land surveyor.
Indeed it was as within a year I was chiseled like a movie star, from removing said vehicle from
where it broke down and getting it back on the trailer.

The one I was around was a mass of rusted chains with many stiff links. You needed a pocket full of patch links to get it back to the trailer. Don't forget the plug as well they are a real chore to get out full of water.

As far as the chains go... red and tacky is your friend. I have taken the plugs out as I don't intend to use it in water like I used to. To far to the river and there is no pub on the other side like there used to be in the old place where we had it.
The only thing that has ever given me problems on this one was the old B&S engine. It always had one hiccup or another. But that source of trouble is no longer in there. So fingers crossed she does what i want her to do.

Are the chains hard to get at? I’ve read more than once that the chains rust really bad and always wondered why you couldn’t just spray them down more frequently with chain lube.

Nope its pretty easy . the whole top part can be tilted up after undoing 12 nuts and then you have everything right in front of you. I brush them liberally with red and tacky grease once in a while and they are as good as new

Ok, I always wondered, I have gone lubing chains with lubriplate x-357 in aerosol cans, its not cheap but does work, and kinda though that sticky stuff should lube those chains, but then thought if its hard to get to a person could use a Lincoln lub-a-matic chain oiler.

The brown parts hinged at the front of the ATV and there is a fold out strut for the back, so in effect the whole thing opens up like a clam shell. Easier to work on than any car or bike for that matter.

That would make a good ATV, easy to work on.

A big plus is that the shell is waterproof and thus dirt proof. That means that if one keeps things real ... not crazy mud fest style driving the mechanical parts and engine stay pretty clean. Even driving through deep mud and waterloos nothing to the moving parts if the plugs are in.

I hate doing ATV maintenance. I would rather spend my money on a some top of the line hiking shoes.

I am going to use this one to skid logs out of the steeper places of my property and bring the cut lumber to where I need it. Ain't no hiking shoes that are going to do that
