Bearings, front end alignment (toe in), king pins?

Tire pressure (Ford had a TSB a while back about excessive tire pressure causing a death wobble condition), ball joints, proper alignment, steering damper, front shocks, tire balance, wheel bearings, all can cause a death wobble. Usually it's a lot of little things that add up to one big problem.

We had that problem on the railway trucks( high pressure tires and narrow). They fixed the problem by installing a shock on the crossarm.

Some vehicles are prone to the "death wobble". Usually a front straight axle 4X4. F250, Dodge and Jeep come to mind. Our son has it on his Jeep Wrangler and has replaced everything under the front end short of his axle housing. He still has it.

Mine was a combo of bad bearing and tires. Front tires wear bad on Fords.

Me too, a Michelin load range E with fairly low mileage mounted on the front right of my 3/4 ton work van.. Coming down the PA Turnpike from the Poconos about fifty miles from home. It left loose about 70 mph and it got a little hairy for a few seconds until I got it under control and off the road onto the shoulder.

I was very surprised it wasn't flat. just a bulge on the inside. I limped home at no more than 25 mph.

Eh...wot?

Rotate tires to rule out a bad tire. Not sure if 2012 still uses a track bar. Check both ends of that. It keeps the axle from shifting side to side. Caster angle in the front end really affects this. I have driven a jeep for years. They are the kings of death wobble.

When on a lift you can't always see the play in some of the components. Much easier to have someone watch the components while the steering wheel is rocked back and forth with the suspension loaded.

Might have lost a wheel balance weight.

My 350, 2015 with 37k did it to me last week 3 times in a mile. Scared the heck out of me. My brothers 15, 250 is doing the same thing with 42k. I called the dealership and told them to fix them and I no need to send a bill. I ask them if this was a problem. After some hesitation they said yes. I can’t believe there hasn’t been a recall. It still did it on the way home but after a new set of tires it drives great. I would replace the tires.

My 2000 3/4 ton Excursion did the same thing. I replaced all the normal stuff like your son did and it didn't help.

Ended up being both stub shafts. Replaced both of them and drives like a dream.

When the wobble did occur, if I flipped on and off the 4x4 it would stop, till I hit a bump or tapped the break, then wobble would be back.

Seems like there was a recall on something like that, not sure what years or the exact fix.

If the tires check out and sounds like its been aligned. I’ve seen on semi tractors the steering box or steering shaft can go bad and are hard to find because it can take a certain set of circumstances to make it happen.

It's usually the track bar on them. I believe they got it now so you can replace the ends on them without replacing the whole bar.
