Both ends were open, and the dirt would drive in as you drove it. I tried them once years ago, and started making my own, by pinching the end shut and cutting them square instead of at a 45. That solved that problem, and I used them for years. Worked great when built right. Don't know why they put the 45 on them, but whoever made the superstakes committed the same fatal error, and I have never used them for that reason!

IF i use a disposible, it's a wolf fang, but like Tom, I use rebar or smooth steel rods. I move too much to tie myself down for a few days in frozen ground with an anchor I can't retreive! Just me!

the angle forces it to one side till it wedges, eventually bends the end back and forth until it breaks. I think I came up with an idea that could solve it. it needs some testing for the long term. and also some slight mods to the anchor itself and a different driver. I did my remaining stakes in about 15 minutes. for years I just squared up the end of the stake and that helped some.
i was meaning, sticking on the driver. there is a reason they are called disposable! of coarse I am a tightwad also.

I made my own pogos for DPs and coon traps. Cable, washers (get small inner holes 1/4") and stops are all I build them with, no j hooks. Cable through the inner washer hole, beat on a stop until flat enough it wont pull through the hole, and other end of length of cable goes though the end hold of swivel and beat on a other stop.
Cheap.
I used a grinder and flat cutting wheel to make a thin cut about 1" deep in point end of a super driver. Slip a washer end into the slot and push or pound that into bank or creek bottom. Hold coon well and if I do lose one I'm not out much. I dont buy stainless or zinc fender washers just get the standard steel.
For coyotes I cross stake rebar only, the only anchor I found that holds plus easier to retrieve from rock solid frozen ground here in january. I would never get a super stake back without a pick axe.
A railroad pick I carry in truck will barely chip out a trap bed in winter here.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Carlis, you calling me a tightwad.......well the shoe fits, I better wear it! grin I left a lot of anchors in the ground in Wy, and used them from year to year, but if your gonna pull them, ya gotta be tuff when the ground gets hard. That's why you can't beat stakes when your hopping!

How ya been Carlis? Good to see you are still around.
Pay attention to that Steinmeyer feller, he seems to be a reasonably good German.

Not seeing much here either, Sargent Lee. Rain, humidity, deer flies, skeets and weeds to pull in the garden.

LOL Zim

I have always used rebar. But this yr wanting to try a good brand. I will be in ends of hayfields. And a good puller I had used vise grips in the past to get rebar out.

Haven't used the iowa. The superstakes will eventually jam as the driver tip will peen/mushroom inside the stake. All in all the standard driver is horrible as both ends will peen/mushroom. The tip just gets stuck the hammer end becomes jagged and will cut and chip sending shrapnel flying when you're hammering.

got to bevel that end on the super stake. I just did some up for RW that the small end was a bit smaller and the upper was just a few thousands .480 as to just fit inside the super stake i had someone comment on my early wolf fang drivers sticking, BAD. I now only made the slot 1/8 deep. that should eliminate the sticking from mushroomed stakes. if anyone has one of those I will replace it or re-machine it free of charge. Just catch me at a show. You got to watch those mushroom heads and keep them ground off.

those bulldog pullers cant be beat. there are some WF type stakes that do have a burr on them because of either a dull punch\ die setup or to much clearance. a stroke or 2 with a file will clean that up.
