Just wanting to clarify a few things.

50% Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer
50% Acetone

1. Correct?

2. Are you able to store leftovers for future use or is the extra wasted?

3. Is this also a good dip to use on DP’s?

I’m just looking to protect my mink and coon traps.

1. yes, though you can go thicker or thinner . If you have a lot to dip and it's a warm day you may need to keep adding a little acetone as it evaporates. When I mixed it I used 1 quart rusty metal primer, 1 quart flat black, 1 to 2 quarts acetone. This made the color a nice mud brown that blended nicely along the river bank.

2. I never had an luck .

3. yes, though a coon will rub it to bare metal after one catch, about like anything else.

I now use brown Andy Stoes Speed Dip for my conibears and coon traps, I think it holds up much better and keeps from year to year. Just dipped today with a 3 year old mix, I let them hang till season starts in Nov., though they usually are dry in a week or so.

If you’ll get a quart of the primer and a quart of acetone that’ll do a lot of traps. Lay them out and get a cheap small spray gun from Harbor Freight and spray them.

I did my traps using 1:1 ratio, worked fine. Do it on a hot, dry day. I left them hanging for a few days to make sure the paint is hardened/cured well. I covered them with tarp when rain threatened. I didn't do my DP's, they are Z-Traps, powder coated. I did my water traps, 155's and my Noonan cages, all is still holding up well. The conibears were slick as dip in wax, had to file off some paint and retuned them. I did saved my paint(5 gal. bucket) but haven't needed yet, I'll check it later.

Even my cables have been holding up well.

if you can remove all the air in your container the mix will keep. I mix mine in a 30 gallon drum . When its time to dip im doing 15- 20 dozen at a time. I do it different I dip mine trap anchor and all. This helps protect my anchors and cables . I can get 3-4seasons out of my anchors this way [Linked Image]

Thank you guys, I appreciate it.

Rendezvous & Tony, thank you very much for the in depth explanation. I always like first hand, recently obtained, information.

When I dip mine, I dip and hang. Come back through after 20-30 min or so and slide my dogs and triggers. This takes care of the buildup. All of my BGs are dipped with compressed springs. Agree on hot, dry days. Acetone seems to be the rage. I use paint thinner....spirits or xylol. I get multiple uses out of a batch, but I’ll add thinner if needed. Sometimes it’ll thicken up some. Better to be too thin than too thick, trust me—dipping traps in paint that’s too thick becomes a major PITA.

Thanks Aix, I appreciate it. Was going to try to store it back in the cans that it came in to see if it’d keep. Kind of like paint.

I had mine thicken during use with 50-50, so I run 60-40 ...Acetone-Rusto and have great results

Make sure the lid is on tight and store with the cans upside down. Air hardened paint will be on the bottom when you open it next time.

I use exterior flat latex paint thinned with water. Works good for me on killpoles.

So I used some 2x4’s that were laying around and put together this contraption so that I could dip and hang my traps. I made it square so that if weather were expected I could throw a tarp over it and not touch the traps.

A couple of questions. I just read an article in Trapper & Predator Caller and the gentleman said to use a paint brush to put it on.

1. Do we actually dip the traps in the dip or do we actually paint it on?

2. I understand that we allow them to hang to dry and cure, do we let them hang longer or do we just put them in something for storage after a few days?

I am still boiling and dyeing here, and probably waxing if I get my ducks in a row.

I speed dip all water traps.

So you'll actually allow them to hang for a couple of months to air out?

Like I said, I'll cover my gazeebo with a tarp and just let them there.

Les, although I use FMJ on my K9 traps, the traps that I'm dipping are my mink/coon/water traps.

I appreciate that Blak. Now when I hang I won’t worry about when to take them down. Heck, I could leave them there covered with a tarp with the bottom open for air flow until I actually need them.

Fancy hanging deal. That’ll work well.

I dip mine. Full coverage, and it’s way faster than brushing.

I’ve hung mine outside for months. If it weren’t for theft risks, I’d still have them hanging outside.

Thanks Aix. Theft is the reason that I built it. I had several extra 2x4’s laying around and just slapped it together.

I’ll tack a tarp on for the roof and let the sides down about half way after about 2 days so they’re not in the weather but can be surrounded by air flow.

Thank you for clarifying the process a little more.

Hey, "not a dipstick", don't forget to suspend an angled trough of tarp or plastic below where they hang for a few minutes to drip, before hanging on the drying rack.
The tarp catches and drains all that dripping back into the dipping bucket.

I know I will catch flak here, but I would never put that crap on my coyote traps. I will re phrase that, if you trap in my area, please use it! I did it one year and paid the price. I could snap those traps and smell the paint the next spring! The coyotes could smell it too cause I had the worst catch ratio I have ever had in 44 years of trapping.I sold all of those traps.

My question was for my NON K9 traps. Now yes, I have spray painted my K9 traps and THEN dipped in FMJ.

For coil springs and long springs, do you prop the jaws open with a nail or something or just dip them with the jaws closed tight?

I plan on giving this method a shot for my rat traps this fall.
