Ok guys what are you folks with out cable or dish using for TV antennas? I got Direct TV right now but they have been in a whizzing match about rates so aren't currently providing one local channel I watched almost daily. Wife wants to drop them go to an antenna and use Hulu or one the other internet things for other few odd channels we watch.. So what is a good antenna.. There are of course a bunch on Amazon can even get one at Menards.. But I'd like to know first hand from others what model and brand is working for them? Way back when signal first went digital. I had small cheaper antenna bought and tried at camper didn't work for crap..

I have a HD Stacker from Denny’s Antenna. I love it and get about 30 channels. I think it cost around $125. I suggest you check out their website and check and see if a antenna will work for you. I’m surrounded by mountains and it works well for me . I have a buddy that got the same one and he got 38 channels.
The bitterness of poor quality last a lot longer than the sweetness of low price

The wife does watch Hallmark but right now no Fox25 it's off..and that is where she watches "HER!" Packer Games, So she wants it up and going before that mess starts..I usually watch Big Bang reruns..LOL I really only need local channels but do watch NatGO & Discovery, History channel...For sure don't need all the other 1000s sports and other crap channels on the Direct.. Last time I tried an antenna when they first went digital. We were told we should be able to get every channel we received on analog. We did get a couple new channels but never did get couple of one we got before digital.. I'm guessing things have improved? Mac

I have an RCA antenna and has a 50 mile range (I think is 50). Gained a bunch of channels like OhioBoy says. I think the antenna was $20 at Walmart. I have an outdoor antenna I need to set up but it's supposed to get a lot more channels

Due to the curvature of the earth the further you are from the stations antennas the less signal you will receive. SO the further from the stations antenna the larger home antenna you need. Nothing has changed, as far as signal goes, from years ago. An old TV tech here, just I actually understand all this and believe you are absolutely correct. Been on cable here at home for many years with exception of one small TV in garage.. At my camper at my property 60 miles north. When they changed from analog to digital signal I lost 3 stations I had gotten for years.. I now have a powered antenna on the new camper I have there and still don't get those channels. So they are either broad cast from a different location farther away or not at the same signal strength as the old analog. I don't know just know I don't get those channels or they are at a unwatchable signal. Mac

At my camp in north-central PA there is an old VHF/UHF antenna mounted above the roof and hooked to an electric motor that rotates it. Before the switch to digital I got all the network channels out of Buffalo NY and a PBS channel. After the switch I had to get the converter box. I lost the network channels (apparently digital is a directed signal and not broadcast 360) but now get three PBS sub-channels if I point it southwest towards Clearfield PA.
the elevation at camp is about 2,400 feet. On overcast days I can pick up a few Canadian channels.
Are modern antenna really much better than the old style?
Eh...wot?

Ours is the $18 1 from Walmart it is FLAT and about 10" square x 1/8" thick and Black. We get over 20 channels with it, most of which we never knew were around. 4 PBS stations, of which 1 is often travelling and another cooking. Grit TV is always old westerns usually black & white Get TV is 60's thru 80's shows--Mannix, Charlies Angels, Magnum PI, Sanford and Son, Rockford Files, McCloud, All in the Family, Mels Place, A-Team, McMillan & Wife, Dragnet, MoviesTV BounceTV--about 75% black shows MyTV--a lot like GetTV...but NO overlaps, completely different shows. 3 Spanish channels 4 shopping channels one channel has ORIGINAL Dennis the Menace and Father Knows Best and Hazel and Lassie and THREE STOOGES and other 50's black & white sitcom shows. 3 local stations pop up too, we use for weather forecast mostly I'll add more when I get home from work!

Are modern antenna really much better than the old style? Its the converter's fault . When you program it it is in only one position. It may be possible to add channels by rotating the rotor but I don't know how. just

I'm not blaming the DTA. I set it up to receive all the available channels from the north and southwest. the network channels (ABC, NBC & CBS) no longer come in. I'm thinking the digital signal is not as strong as the old analog was. Or, like I said, maybe it's a directed signal (at higher density population centers) and not a 360 degree broadcast like analog was.
I used to get some analog channels from Canada, still get a few fuzzy ones but Canada is going to a digital signal as well.
Eh...wot?

That's where I got my RCA one same dimensions but in white. Just like you I didn't know most of these channels existed. Bounce TV also shows a lot of "older" movies. Alien Vs Predator, various Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Jackie Chan to name a few. Earlier was a Jack Nicholson and Samuel L Jackson movie. MeTV shows classic shows like Hogans Heros, Mash, Gilligan's island (Maryann or Ginger?) Andy Griffith etc... If these are considered local channels tman want don't cable and satellite provide them?

Well wife got a hold direct TV.. their answer to us not having local channel was to send out a tec to put up an antenna and add switch so we could go back and forth. Wife told them no to that and that we wanted to end our service. She got it all set up and we don't have to pay and disconnect or end of plan fee's because they changed our plan not us.. Wife ordered the antenna OhioBoy recommended and when it gets here I'll hook it up. We also will be using Hulu for the few channels we watch that aren't local. Should actually save a few bucks too..My son always say his mother has the eye of the Jew.. So I let her do all kind a dealing.. I usually get to hot headed doing it.. So I will be watching Mountain Men, Letter Kenny, Curse Of Oak Island and Life Below Zero on Hulu..
We'll figure it out! always do.
Mac
