I’m a pa resident, I posted earlier this month about a trapping trip. Ideally I’d like to trap Maine, however, I looked into regulations and things in New York and found that they have marten, no bobcat limit (and a much longer season) and they have more relaxed laws regarding use of conibears on land.
I’d really love to trap a marten, has any one had success doing this in NY? What set ups did you use, I’m just looking for any info possible about trapping New York. I plan on attending the NY trappers convention to pick some brains about it from the locals, but if anyone can share, I’m all ears

NY and PA seasons work good together for me especially with living within a mile of the border.

The negative about New York is the non resident trapping fee. The NYS trappers convention is one of the best, you can get lots of good info there. Also, you can put in your application for the fisher/pine marten permit at the convention.Be sure to read the regs, NY has goofy regs involving carcasses, log books, etc. New York is far more liberal than Pennsylvania when it comes to using conibears; running poles, etc. I would venture that most of our fisher and marten are taken in them. Pine marten are expanding their range, but they are not everywhere in the Adirondacks, only certain areas. Also our Adirondack Fisher/Marten season opens too early, but that's my opinion. The Adirondacks offers lots of other stuff to trap: beaver, otter, mink, coyotes, etc. It's big country and beautiful. Do your research ahead of time.

Thank you for the info.
I will probably be trapping in Adirondacks, or in Sullivan county NY because I have family with land there.
I would like to do the Adirondacks because of the marten Unless you can make time to do a lot of scouting right before and during the season, Marten are hard to come by. There are small pockets in the northeastern Adirondacks but they are few and far between. The harvest data for 2017-2018 shows a total of 50 for the entire state.

Fisherman is correct about the Fisher season in NY. being way to early. I've looked at lots of Fisher at the auctions in Canada and the lots of graded skins that are marked II's and III's are pretty well loaded with New York tags. It's almost impossible to find a quality Fisher skin taken in New York State, all because of the season being set to early. I had the opportunity to talk to a NYS conservation officer years ago about this and his answer was that the state sets the season to provide trapping opportunity, they're not concerned about fur quality. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around that perspective.

I'm coming to the New York Convention this year & then heading into the Adirondacks to check out an area to run a marten & fisher line .
I was told catch on both this year would be down as theres a high mast crop upthere this year .
If I catch a couple of each , i'll be happy .
Hopefully the hand drawn map i was given at the Nta convention makes a difference in success.
Fur Trapping ; Its not about making Money, Its All about the Adventures you'll have on the Trapline .
