My wife has been an employee of this company for twenty three years Her job that she was doing was phased out ,She was told she could keep her present wage and benefits but would have to take a job that requires weekends and Holidays (every other ) she would be in charge of 5 people but if anyone calls in she has to fill their shift and is on call 24/7 .If she declines this offer they have nothing and she will be offered a severance but we don't know what that will be unless she declines the job.She can retire at 62 or 65 and is 60 now .One more thing in those 23 years she has never called in or missed her shift . Ahhhh gratitude

I would look at your finances, calculate all perspectives and options, and calculate the opportunity costs. My wife is going through the same thing for two years. She will work one more year put up with the changes, and then retire. With her degree she loves working with kids also, she will retire and sub at our local school for $100.00 per day. Work when and as she wants, and make spending money. Draw her retirement pension and start drawing social security. Look at Social Security, at 62 or wait. Our perspective is start drawing as soon as possible you never know if you'll be here tomorrow.

To be perfectly honest, the company seems to be at least trying to not let her go. Most would have already given her the severance and said see ya.
Take the severance.

Really in all fairness if she would have married right she wouldn't of had to work! Lol

It is almost always easier to find a new job while you are working. She could take their offer and be actively seeking. She will also know exactly what her job will be like.

If she thinks she will dislike her new position so much that she wouldn't want to go to work for the next 5 yrs I say find a new one. Every job move I've made has been good. Change is the spice of life.

Insurance is often the key factor in a case like this!

Very much so.
I am the cash cow in my marriage, but if you figure in the insurance that my wife works like a rented mule for that would not be the case.

A bird in the hand ................ May not find a comparable job at 60. Her pension will increase with the two additional years, and her SS may also.

Finding a comparable job, or one that is even close, might be tough at her age (60). Employers can't ask how old she is but all they have to do is look at her resume/application and they will probably figure it out.

Companies want to hire younger people and pay them less. Even with her skill set, it will be difficult to beat out younger applicants.

And then there is being on call 24/7. That will put a damper on any plans you want to make for weekends and evenings.

Family finances will play a big part in your decision. Are you dependent on her salary? Whose job provides the health insurance? Etc.

Tough decision. Lots of stuff to consider before making it.

Good Luck.

That response doesn't surprise me from you, as it shouldn't from anyone. You and Grousewit are in good company together as being inconsiderate ninnies lol smilely face. Snowpa, today's time has no gathering of respect or consideration from most employers, they only see the bottom line on paper. My advice is for her to suck it up while coming up with a plan to screw them over, whatever benefits you all. Good luck!

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

I’m not surprised you said something stupid like that.

I would take the severance pay and retire early.
