Hard to say,some people say they know him and they wouldn't put it past him to pull a fast one,others say they know him and he's the real deal.

The one thing I question right after the news came out about his buck was where he shot it.I've never hunted the immediate area where he was,but the northern lower peninsula was noted for very high hunter numbers(35+ per square mile in many areas)and small racks.I hunted for many years in the northern lower peninsula and a rack that size....its hard to believe.I'm not calling him a liar,strange things do happen,but the law probability says otherwise.

Don't know him but remember the controversy well. I believe it was shot back in '98 in Grand Traverse County. Personally I think it was the real deal. 4 people witnessed the buck, 3 scorers from Commemorative Bucks of Michigan, and a Conservation Officer. So many people trashed him saying it was a farm raised deer, a hoax with fake antlers, etc. He basically said screw it and never had it entered into the books and pretty much disappeared. He has shot many big bucks in his life, a very good deer hunter.

I remember all the controversy back then Savell. Myself and all my friends watched and read all about that. Lots of unanswered questions, then Mitch pulled it from the record books if I remember correctly. Lots of questions for sure.

Shooting a really large buck would be great But for me I could not tell you the difference between a 150 and a 180 . They would be large buck .However I have worked hard and endured some rotten weather conditions and either did not get a deer. or killed a small buck on a cold windy and nasty day. I have a world of respect for anyone that only kills large buck .To me though a situation like this cheapens the reasons for wanting to hunt buck in the first place

Seems it would have been easy to prove it wasnt a hoax if Rompola would have wanted to clear his name.

This story is just crazy from beginning to end.I remember reading one week where some guy said Rompala hunted out of their camp one year and was violator from the moment he got there,not just in his actions but the way he talked.I believe he even said it got so bad they threw him out of their camp and didn't want him back.When this came out he withdrew the rack,I don't recall him saying much but by that time he had already been called a fraud ,that latest charge sent the whole thing over the edge and he disappeared.After a time,more and more stories began to hit the hunting media about Rompala being a over the top whitetail hunter that really knew his stuff.His living room has other trophies on the wall that he shot thru the years that should prove he's the real thing,his friends on the other side said.I believe that's pretty much where the whole mess got left.

I remember this story well. If I recall, more than a couple of dnr official scorers handled the rack and skull and deemed it legit. I think the biggest question was if it was a farmed deer.

Now that pic is proof, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that unscrupulous measures were taken to reduce that fine buck to possession.
Why, just observe the snide facial expression, exhibiting pomposity, arrogance, and true lack of respectable character.
Either that, or the Photoshop pic of that dudes face was pulled from a pic while he was taking a dump. I can see that going either way...

I hope someday we do know the truth. Personally I think the buck is legit. Just too many things about it that point that way. The fact that it was shot by a known violator and in the area it was, just adds to the craziness of the story.

These days we are pretty jaded about internet attacks, but back then, it took Mitch totally off guard. He had no idea what was coming and it hit him full in the face, he just pulled back and went into hiding with his buck.

I remember the story, but I'm more interested about what happened to D.B. Cooper, where is Hoffa's body , who really was involved with the JFK assassination.
