There was a thread on here about a month or so ago on scrap steel & iron and we eastern SD guys were lamenting that steel scrap price is in the toilet. Hydropillar said that whole "white goods" appliance scrap was going to a buck a ton and yes, that's what it is around here today. I can't imagine anyone answering a craigslist "free" call to take out 10 stoves but a guy did about a week ago past week or so. He reposted the ad again today so I decided to contact him and explain why he wasn't getting any hits on the ad.

Me: I see that you've popped up your stove removal deal again. Haven't you wondered why no one took you up on it last week or whenever you had it listed earlier...? Because THERE IS NO MONEY in it!! Steel prices are in the crapper, have dropped over 90% since last year!!! I just called TJN and they're offering a mighty $1 A TON for white goods!! Maybe someone can strip out the non-ferrous from your old stoves but that's more work and still not much money. People in Sioux falls area are going to have to start to understand that is you want steel gone this year, you need to starting PAYING THE SCRAPPERS to haul. Only someone extremely desperate for cash and super energetic is going to haul light steel for a $10 a ton. I doubt anyone will haul white goods for a BUCK A TON!! Good luck dude!!!

His reply: if ya dont want it then dont reply i dont care either way ill haul it
myself some people may have a place to stock pile either way i dont care

I see the ad is gone. Maybe he pulled it, maybe he found a sucker who had storage space for 10 stoves. I don't think they'll be moving from their new home (if they found one) anytime soon unless through court order to vacate crap!

Yeah, especially since it costs people money to drop them off at the landfill. The guy with the 10 stoves I was trying to educate would pay at least $20 to drop that load if not $50.

I was going to be passing the scrap yard last week so I picked up on the way into the place, had 500 lbs on the truck in eight miles and passed up a grill at the end of that, no room. Did get 15 dollars so light steel is better here in SE WI.

Tin prices are down to $140/ton in NY. Cars are $148/ton. I see a lot of grills curb side during trash pickup,4 years ago, you never saw one.

For those guys who have an end-user of scrap steel nearby or if an exporter still has a decent overseas market, I think things have softened since last year, and last year was low compared to say circa 2012 or so, but still doable for a lot of guys. But out here in the middle of the country that never had much if any heavy industry and is abouit as far away from a potential export coast, the bottom has surely fell out. Even alum beverage cans are as low (still not 90+% off) as I've seen them in x number of years (now at 30 cents a pound). A guy can get used to clean alum being a quarter a pound vs 40 cents but the steel prices fully suck hind teet. Maybe next year...

When the prices are high the old cars start disappearing from the old farms and everyone will haul your junk away!

Seems to me that scrap prices are up and down with gas prices. I've got a man that I save junk for, honestly I figure he's lucky to pay for his gas now. I appreciate him hauling it away.
