The missus thought she found a camper for us. I need one for the new property to stay in while doing the site prep and for the missus and cats to stay in while I move the houseboat. After that it will be designated guest house till the house is built. Anyway she thought she found what we want north of Myrtle beach at a RV dealer there. Sent a couple pf e mails back and forth and she talked to him on the phone. Going by the description, It had a small leak in the past that was fixed now and the wallpaper next to the door was shriveled because of it. When we got there the dry rot stench in the thing was something else. the front wall was rotted through you could see the ground through the floor and the ceiling was held up with a few bits of board and some rusty staples. Every window had silicone smeared around it that looked like a finger painting exercise from a toddlers playgroup. After that I stopped looking and drove back home. 500 mile round trip for zip.

There is nothing for sale locally and that dealer had a dozen pictures of it but managed to not take pics of the bad places. I look at it as an educational field trip.

unfortunately the world has a few crooks in it. sometimes a phone call will help you decide whether to take the trip or not. a salesman will not volunteer information that may prevent a sale most of the time but most will tell the truth if asked a direct question.

I have two trailers parked at my place at the lake.. My experience is that if you can keep the water, mice and ants out of them they stay in pretty good shape. So that would be the 3 things I would look for most as you shop. Of course you already seen the water thing which is usually the biggest issue in my opinion. Seen some real messes when I was shopping for trailers. Some only couple years old and wreaked by water..I just patched a leak in the roof of my sons trailer I'm hoping hasn't messed things up to bad. Ran the A/C for two days drying it out not sure that was enough before had to close it back up??? Good luck with your search and look trailer over good even from private party. There are some good ones out there and some real dogs..,

Yup private sales it is from here on in. That was a steep learning curve but in that regard worth the trip. Its the wrong time of the year to buy a camper as the camping season seems to be in full swing. So good deals are thin on the ground. But I can't change or choose the timeline at this point. I got the better half looking on Craigs list and facebook market place. I am pretty sure that by next weekend weekend I am going to have one dangling on the hitch of my truck to take to our bit of dirt.

I guess I have been lucky when purchasing items long distance. I agree with all above posts.
You cannot ask too many questions. When conversing with seller have a list of questions to present to them. Also in this day have them send pictures of front, back, top, bottom, inside, ask what doesn't work, how are tires, how is wiring, and had any rodent problems, etc.
The seller may get irritated, but it is your money and time. If he is serious about selling he will answer you.
I have found that sometimes when I paid more than I wanted to it turned out to be better for me than if I had tried to go the cheapest way.
I hope your next trip has better results.

Most used car salesmen have served time for rape. I imagine used camper salesmen aren't far behind.

It has some little niggles but no leaks. Have to fix the fridge but the rest of the stuff on board works fine. Brakes work to good when empty so I had to disable the rear axle brakes for now or the tires would not have made it through the smokey mountains.
