Has anyone used one of these Ground Hog Max discs that utilize ATV weight for ground penetration? I have several 1 acre food plots that are accessible with an ATV but not a tractor.

My buddy had one, worked good in a plot that was already worked once. They didn't work well in newer hard ground

One like that you really cannot any weight to them to help them dig unless you add the weight to the atv. I had a double gang pull type that worked ok. The ground needs to be soft, they just are not heavy enough. IMO

There was segment on this week's Michigan-Out Of-Doors show on this very disk. Starts at the 18:05 mark in the video.

I have used one quite a bit. As has already been brought up it's not much good on new or packed ground. I actually lift my 4wheeler suspension as high as I can then put the pin in. Have to run in 4X4 just to be able to move be, going fast and turn lots...it beats the far out of me and the 4wheeler both. I'm looking for some kind of a cultivator as a replacement.

I have the same model. Worked okay but I have a lot of rock in the ground I was working. Felt like I was beating the 4 wheeler as I was working the soil. Used for a summer on different plots until a disc bearing gave out. Contacted the company and they sent out a new bearing set-up. Never installed it as I bought a 4' section of spring tooth drag which works great in comparison. Less stress on the atv and on me as the Ground Hog Max transferred a lot of punishment straight up!! I would sell my Max unit for $60.00 as is!

Appreciate all the feedback- beating the snot out of my 4-wheeler is not a preferred option.

If you utilize a herbicide sprayer and broadcast your seed - some great food plots can be established without any tillage. Or, if you can burn off the area and then broadcast it will also work. Utilize some ground penetrating radishes, turnips, rapeseed etc to send down tap roots and help soften and breakup the soil. When these decompose they will add organic matter and naturally loosen the soil without tillage. I believe at one time a company even labelled a "tillage radish". Do not forget about green browse plots as well such as clovers, alfalfa. I would say soil sample as well if you want the best results. Personally, I like mixing my species in my plots in case something fails the other will do well. An old standby I utilize is oats, red clover, and rapeseed. I wont have $20/ acre in it. The oats generally will freeze out but are an excellent attractant for archery. Cereal rye or wheat could be substituted if you desire winter longevity.

I should add - I have never purchased a labelled "food plot" mix. I just order a few pounds of this and few pounds of that at my local feed store and bin run oats, wheat etc
