Bobcat attacks 4-year-old girl and her family at Arizona campground

Arizona Game and Fish are on the hunt for a bobcat that bit five family members, including a 4-year-old girl, Sunday evening at a campground in Safford, which is a few hours southeast of Phoenix.

The family was treated at an area hospital as a precaution for rabies, according to Mark Hart with the Arizona Game and Fish Department in Tucson.

Such attacks are "fairly unusual," he said.

Family was camping

Sunday's attack involved a family staying at Shannon Campground on Mt. Graham.

At about 8 p.m., the 4-year-old girl was playing around the family's tent when her mother heard her scream and found her being attacked by the bobcat.

Other families members ran to assist the girl and
Attacks are rare

Arizona saw one bobcat attack last year and one in 2009, he said.

Bobcats do not typically attack unless cornered or provoked, Hart said. Their typical response to humans is to leave, he said.

Arizona Game and Fish workers have set traps to capture the bobcat, Hart said.

They're asking anyone in the area to avoid Shannon and Snow Flat camps. Anyone who spots an aggressive bobcat in the Mt. Graham area is asked to call 623-236-7201.

I don't remember the name of the show on TV, but it was AZ where a homeowner had his two little dogs attacked by a bobcat one night. He had let his dogs out to relieve themselves. The homeowner had a wall surrounding his entire yard. Surveillance cameras showed a large bobcat jump the wall, kill one of the dogs and seriously wound the other one. The cat took the dead dog over the fence. That cat was so fast neither dog had a chance.

The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never let the dumbest ones lead the pack.

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

I don't know, but it's certainly possible. Why else would it take the dog?
