had this one 25 years it works well enough I don't really use it all that much but it rides around in my tackle box , range bag or hunting pack depending on what I am doing.

all of the multi tools seem a real compromise in something , My gerber multi tool is the original where the pliers come out the front with a flick of the wrist , one handed opening pliers were important at the time because I always seemed to have something in the other hand when I needed them. the belt sheath for the gerber came with an adapter several screw driver bits , most of them are lost now but they were very handy.

at the time 1994 if you broke the Gerber you sent it in an they mailed you back a new one.

it may not be the best but it is paid for a long time ago.

Here's a knife and sheath I made for my brother last Christmas. I like carbon steel and some shape to the handle to keep the knife in your hand.

I've got a pile of knives here, a couple of nice semi custom blades too...all I use now for a fixed blade is a Mora companion, carbon steel. I can buy them all day for 14 bucks, they're sharp as a scalpel, have a decent sheath and will skin and bone out a lot of deer before it needs sharpening, and you can abuse it without feeling guilty, I've got one in the truck, boat, pack, and spares laying around, I gave my son and nephew one and thats all they use now.
Best knife value ever....lol

SOG power assists are flick of the wrist opening. Can't beat the holding power of the SOG.

it is interesting that many of our favorite belt knives really are not much different than the old trade knives , the old french and English trade knives. https://www.ragweedforge.com/HistoricalKnifeCatalog.html

or the Scandinavian Puukko knives .

cutting and daily knife tasks really haven't changed that much in 200 years

Ambush32 - Nice knife to have. One thing about it cheaper knives that our Dad's bought are a better grade than many of the mass produced knives out on today's market.

Anytime I see grey steel for a knife blade I'm interested.

No just that grey color. The stuff that schrade case kabar and others used. The steel in that plastic handled belt knife above. Now its all real shiny. Here's what that shiny steel looks like after a couple years in your pocket compared that old grey steel after 25 years. The yellow mini trapper is barely two years old. I'm still carrying it. The worn smooth bone handle mini trapper spent at least 25 years in my pocket and except for the handle getting wore smooth and the blade sharpened down a bunch its still good as new.

Well said, that's the good stuff.
Growing up in Colorado I have a pretty good collection of Western knives from way back. The nice thing about them being a Company based in Colorado anyone who worked there or had relatives had their knives. You could always trade for one as a kid. They made a really nice sheath Knife and small hatchet combo for hunting. I carry that one in my hunting pack.

This is my most favorite knife out of all. It is a West-Cut made in Boulder Colo. , West-Cut was a lower line of Western Cutlery. I found this knife in the mountains while tagging along with my Dad to go gold panning. All there was left were the blade and rivets, rodents had eaten the handle most likely. My Dad gave me two pieces of wood to whittle to shape, got the hand crank drill out for me to drill the handles. He showed me on a piece of scrap how to peen over the two-piece copper rivets. I was walking with a big pep in my step after rebuilding the old knife, I was 10 years old at the time and I had my first Mountain Man knife.

cathouse jim that is certainly one special knife indeed. it would be great if every kid had a good knife with the lessons and story to go with it.

no special story with these really the one on the left is my sons we made the same knife from kits together when he was about 12 unfortunately I lost mine it was my favorite and need to make a new one.
I have been carrying the other two mostly the last year , I am also a fan of the carbon steel but the Appleseed store was selling the cold steel lite hunter for 10 dollars so I gave it a try , very handy knife then last fall I was at my great aunts hunting and she needed a knife so I gave it to her. well a week late my wife was ordering my Christmas present of Appleseed shirts and added a knife to the order she couldn't pass up a 10 dollar knife either she didn't even know I had given mine to my aunt.
the Mora is just hard to beat for the money broken down a bunch of deer with each of the knives , as well as a lot of lunches.

the poly sheaths are kind of handy they will clip on a pocket or pants without a belt they often get carried in the leg pocket of my overalls

my wife carries a knife in her purse , she has few folders he has claimed as hers , she even bought herself a SOG folder she calls her travel fruit knife.

we should probably call them pants knives at our house , my wife will ask "you wearing pants" this means I need a knife . this started with her asking if I had a knife on me and I would reply am I wearing pants.

just don't understand people who wear pants but down't carry a knife.

anytime somebody needs to cut something, my wife volunteers me.

I usually do it myself because most people don't know what a sharp knife really is.

about the only time I don't have a knife is in the shower, bed, or working out - and even then, its close by

I keep my wives kitchen knives sharp. Most people that lend a hand in her kitchen are aware now. Most have knicked a finger or two finding out. Wife has gotten spoiled. She really hates a dull knife now and usually complains to me if she is helping out in a friend or family members kitchen. She says its bad manners to bring your own kitchen knife.
