Hi everybody I am new to trapping, but have been studying and learning more about it every day. I wish to target raccoon and coyotes (if I can get good enough). I have a few older foothold traps, but I plan to make an order from Minnesota trapline products, and order a few very nice mb 550 traps, and some bridger dog proof traps, a long with some set making equipment, and a book, etc. Just was hoping to get some tips before I start. Thanks sincerely, Kyle

Welcome aboard Kyle. You’ll find a wealth of knowledge on here. Collectively these folks pretty much know everything about everything. Some more good resources on YouTube are Coon Creek Outdoors for fur handling, Hoosier Trapper for a good quality and entertaining show about trapping, and Clint Locklear’d Trapping Radio 2.0 podcast is a wealth of info as well.

Best of luck and don’t be afraid to ask questions

Go to a trapper convention/rendezvous if possible, to see demos in person. I don't know if New York has a state convention, but how about this one (pinned to the top of the page)?

Howdy Kyle, welcome aboard! I know a lot of Baker's from Bloomingburg in Orange County, are you related to them?

Lots of reading to do in the archives in this site, will help you narrow down your questions so you can be more specific when asking for help.

Welcome to the world of Trapping. Your life will never be the same! My first and foremost suggestion is to join your local and National Trapping organizations. This is an excellent way to show your support to help fight the antis. When you join your local organization, you may be able to find someone that will help mentor you. Your local organization may send out newsletters etc to help you on your journey. The NTA and FTA provide excellent magazines to not only help with trapping techniques but also keep you up to date on the battles trappers are facing. Enjoy.

Check to see if your local organization has a trapper training school.

NYS Convention will be held 8/29 to 8/31 2019. Great demos on fur handling and many dealers. Google it and see for yourself regarding the schedule. Wealth of info.

Welcome to Trapperman. Pull up a seat, grab your favorite drink and enjoy. I think you'll find a good amount of knowledge here. As a newer trapper myself, these guys and gals have been a wealth of good knowledge and a lot of laughs.

I started with connibears for beaver and raccon. Foot trappping took a little learning. Stay near water if possible.

One thing to remember is you will never be good enough, you can learn every day year after year. The only constant in trapping is that just when you figure it out something will change.

Wish I had more time to trap....
