Been a terrible year so far for drownings on the Great Lakes. Even with the red flags flying and rip current warnings, people still feel the need to get in the water. The Great Lakes are beautiful but they need to be respected. This year, as of July 28 there have been 51 drownings.
Lake Michigan - 27 Lake Erie - 11 plus 1 missing boater Lake Ontario - 6 Lake Huron - 5 Lake Superior - 2

All they had to do was swim a short ways parallel to the shore, then swim to shore. A rip tide is a narrow band of water which flows out like a rapid stretch of river. I live near the Atlantic ocean. They don't put out red flags. The locals know what to do. The rest are just yankee tourists...

Here in our portion of Lake Erie, it is not rip tide or current but under tow. We have at least one drowning every year with people swimming off the breakwall in Barcelona, at the marina.

The waters of Lake Michigan (and all the lakes) is the highest it has been since 1986. Areas that "aren't deep" now are and I think that has caught people off guard.

How many of those weren't wearing a pfd? most if not all, if I had to guess. we have several deaths every year in the rivers here - it still amazes me when the report says that they could not swim, and were not wearing PFDs.

Seems that it wasn’t all that long ago that they were talking about Michigan being so incredibly low and how it was effecting boating in and around the ports.

Seems that it wasn’t all that long ago that they were talking about Michigan being so incredibly low and how it was effecting boating in and around the ports. water is up over the piers that we had to climb out of the boat and up the wall 7 years ago I think about 7 feet higher than 7 years ago so you can imagine a beach now 3-4 feet more water than normal what was waist deep is now over your head. the other issue is the waves on Michigan , for those of you who are familiar with Atlantic waves a 3 foot wave coming in the crests of the waves are far apart 25-30 yards apart you get some recovery time if you get smacked with one , on Michigan they are much closer together on a 3 foot wave you might have 25-30 feet between crests if a wave is moving at around 3-4 mph that is 4-5 fps the difference is on the atlantic a wave feels like it hits you ever 20 seconds approximately it has been a few years since I was on the Atlantic but on Michigan you have a 3 foot wall of water hitting you every 5-6 seconds water feet deeper than it was and waves that smack you and can carry a person off their feet ever 6 seconds , not a good place for a weak swimmer.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

How many of those weren't wearing a pfd? I think many of the deaths were swimmers, so no pfd. Lake Superior had only 2 deaths because it really never gets warm enough to swim in comfortably. Zim
