Just wondering if anyone in the eastern part of Nebraska, western part of Iowa, or eastern Kansas or South Dakota raises Norwegian Elkhounds? I lost mine about a year ago and have thought about getting another. I've had Elkhounds since 1964 and miss one around the place.

I spent a lot of time around one in the 70's. Great dog. Good luck on your search.

Call the shelter in Norfolk or Sioux City and leave your name with a #,,, if they get a rescue dog you may luck into one. Summer is when people move from 1 city to another and if you are patient (like mink trapping) you have a good chance of finding one. besides there are rescue sites on this tube that may be of use. I have had poor luck with them if I mention the dog will be used for hunting (labs, beagles, shorthairs etc.) so just stick to a local shelter if that is your intent. They seem to be more down to earth folks with the dog's benefit in mind..... the mike

The one and only one I have known is an incessant barker. Anytime the wind blows a different direction that dog is barking... and it has the bark of a large chihuahua. Maybe that is just that one particular Elkhound and maybe it's because the owner does not hunt it or do anything to appease its instinct to hunt but it's one of the very few dogs I've ever met that I actually dislike. About as smart as a bag of hammers and barks more than most ankle biters. Like I said, it could just be that one dog as that's my only experience with the breed.
