Good day Gentlemen,

I have a few questions I would like to ask your honest opinion on.

Q) Do any of you fellows actually eat the meat of either Fox, Coyote, Racoon, or Opossum?

Personally I am game on just about anything, but the Mrs. simply refuses to eat even Lamb, Goat, rabbit, or squirrel.

I am certain she will clean & cook it if asked, but personally, I'm a little leery of eating meat from scavengers.

I'm mostly interested in the Fox and Coyote meat.

After spending my youth in the Marines many years ago, I would eat just about anything if it was cooked well done.

I am asking only because I would hate any meat going to waste if I can utilize it.

Thank you for your anticipated replies.

Bill

In my culture, predator(canine) meat is considered caern and not to be eaten.
I have eaten lynx which is quite good.

not snared but I have eaten raccoon. it reminded me very much of turkey leg meat kind of stringy but otherwise fine.

at least with raccoon skin remove all the fat we could with a knife and the glands inside of legs front and rear then par boiled to further remove fat then finished cooking however you like.

I know of a guy who saves young coyotes to eat , he shoots them and not trapped , he served in Korea and ate dog over there so coyote is no concern to him.

Virgil,

Racoon is a little too greasy for me, same as for the lonely Opossum.

Had Monkey and dog on a stick in Asia, no problems.

I would just hate to waste any meat if at all possible.

GreenCountyPete,

Only land Trapping here in NJ is done with Cable Snares.

I don't eat snared meat because its not bled properly (religious reasons). I would assume it would have a stronger flavor.

Coon, groundhog and such are wonderful table fare but preparing it properly is the key. I would assume the same for canines, I'd give it a go and see if you like it.

I do not know anyone, including me, that ate coyote meat and called it good. Its pretty bad. Most everything else it depends on who you ask. There isn't any of them unhealthy to eat. Just have to cook taste and see for yourself.

cable snares may only be used under ice here in WI, all our land cables must be cable restraints with relaxing revers washer, deer stops and break away s hooks .

eating scavengers does not bother me...i eat catfish after all

I've had raccoon and tried fix - neither are winning any awards, but will do in a pinch.
enough seasoning and crockpot or grill will do the trick.

I completely understand not wanting to waste the meat - but truth is its probably going to go to waste with freezer burn if you don't truly enjoy eating it.
I know if I had them in my freezer, I'd be reaching for the beef, chicken, fish or venison before the coon, yote or possum everytime.

we trap for the fur, not the meat - and there isnt that much meat on most them critters cept maybe a yote

Some of the coons I catch have some serious weight to them. But I still don't get hungry thinking about them.

I haven't tried raccoon yet but Sam Wood made a video about it years ago and I've been meaning to try it. I think removing all the glands is key...

I've eaten coon and let's just say I won't be eating it again. Based on how they smell I have no desire to try coyote. If you're thinking about eating otter, let me just save you the trouble and recommend against that as well.

I have eaten coon that was shot on drift trips. Cut into pieces, boiled, then fried. Good cold the next day in the boat. Goes with everything, even bourbon.

Think I’ll stick with a quarter pounder with cheese.

We've tried bobcat it and it was good! Just remove as much sinew as possible, sprinkle with seasonings, and smoke it!
