Will save the justice system/taxpayers millions over the decades to come versus a couple of life sentences in prison for 50+ years each for two sick people who were in their late teens. What they call "best of a bad situation".

Crosspatch. You got that 100% right ! Up here we have been known to let murderers walk the streets after they have taken their meds for a while.

Did they give up or did they finally find a man in Canada? I didn't read the article.

They were found dead a little ways in the bush.
Flys drove them to kill themselves likely.
The Northern boreal forest is no place for southerners.

I agree with Boco here-I have been north in the summer-the bugs are absolutely relentless-if you have never experienced them-do you best not to-it will be something you'll remember forever.

Yes

I am in NW Ontario right now. Skeeters are worse than I’ve ever seen them in 40 years. Usually only bother during dawn and dusk but they have been bad all day every day. Ankle biters and deer flys seem to be at normal levels.

Thanks, Trapset. I was hoping those two stumbled across someone who didn't tolerate their stunts .

I went on a spring bear hunt in Manitoba in 2011. Base camp was a hotel in Manigotagan on lake Winnipeg. The bugs were unreal mostly mosquitos. A thermacell helped but i got several bites the first night on stand. Those bites left some big welts on my face. Lucky for me one of the guys tagged out early and he let me use a bug suit with a hood. Our guide made it real clear that you do not go looking for your bear by yourself for the obvious reason and to stay put until he came to get you. He told us numerous stories of people getting lost in the woods as they are so thick and the bugs would drive you to the point of taking your life. I did not believe him at first but after a few days out there I could believe it. I would not go back with out a bug tamer suit.

I was in Ontario fishing thirty years ago, every bug you saw was either biting you, going to bite you, or just got done biting you. Black flies, mosquitoes, main culprits but virtually any bug would bite you. Fishing lousy, beer too expensive, never even considered going back to that heck hole.

Horse flys(bulldogs) and hoards of blackflies in the day when its hot,and mosquitoes at night, especially at dawn and dusk, and then the tiny sandflies (noseeums) that are the worst.
We learn how to live with them here.I haven't used bug dope in the bush for years.I stopped using bug dope when hunting spring bear.it contaminates the meat that is processed in the bush.Loose fitting fairly heavy clothes with tight cuffs and NO HOLES in the day when on the move, and a smudge at night or in the day when not moving.
Native remedy to keep bugs from biting exposed skin is bear grease rubbed on,when a smudge is not practical.Damp sphagnum moss is the best to use on a smudge.
As far as getting lost in the bush here-quite a few have disappeared over the years and never been found.
Check out the blackfly song on utube by Wade Hemsworth.
It was written by a guy working on the newpost diversion of the little Abitibi river back in the 50's,not far(about 2 miles) from where I am trapping nuisance beaver right now.

If it weren’t for the bugs NW Ont would be packed full of Tourists in the summer.

That’s my favorite thing about the bugs here. 😀

Like Boco, I haven’t used bug dope here or at home in years. Clothing and timing are best defense IMO. Also lighting PIC mosquito coils in shop, cabin, outhouse etc. clear them out quick, fast, and in a hurry!

If it's anything like northern MN, it's all of the above and throw in some mighty nasty biting horse flies.
