WATERTOWN -- Two puppies were fatally shot in Watertown on Thursday, Aug. 8 after a neighbor says they were mauling her goats. The dog owners say they are sickened and heartbroken by the loss of their pets, but the property owner whose son shot the puppies, say they were attacking her pets and didn't have tags.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office responded to a call on Willow Road in Watertown Thursday night; the caller said their puppies were shot.
"Honestly at first I didn't believe it. Pure disgust," said Justin Schlender, puppy owner.
The dog owners say the 8-month-old pups dug out of their fenced area, and ended up across the street. After looking for three hours, the owners discovered they were killed on a neighbor's property.
"Furious, dumbfounded that anybody could physically do that," said Todd Schlender, puppy owner.
Sheriff's deputies say it happened when the puppies attacked the woman's pets.
"They were just barking barking barking and biting the goats," said Heidi Hanus, property owner.
Heidi Hanus says she heard her goats crying when she noticed two dogs come out of the goat shelter. Her goats were bleeding and severely injured.
Heidi Hanus "My son did shoot them but we didn't know they were someone's pets," Hanus said.
Hanus says the dogs didn't have tags on them and were mauling her goats. One will have to be put down as a result.
"They were attacking my goats. They were mauling my pets. I don't know what else to say, I'm so sorry," said Hanus.
The puppy owners say they wish it could have gone differently.
"If they would have shot the gun in the air instead of numerous times at the dogs, the dogs would have ran," Todd Schlender said.
Hanus wants people to know they are not puppy killers.
The state law says a person may intentionally kill a dog if a domestic animal on the owner's property is therated with serious bodily harm. The sheriff's department said the investigation is ongoing.

Here a dog just on your property can be shot I know of a bird hunter's dog that went on a landowners land and he just shot it no law against it, rare case but that was the way it went.

I feel sorry for the goats. After dealing with goats... I don't. But I don't care a whit about the dogs either. Around here chasing or molesting stock = dead dog. Mike

If they did not shoot them dogs then it would be a "not my dog" story and the goat people would eat the vet bill I doubt the dog people will be forking over cash as it is since their dogs were shot! Better case the way it went really.

I had the game wardens dogs attack my free range chickens a couple of times. Second time I managed to catch the young dumb one. He came right to me when offered my friendship. The game came with cash and an apology when he picked him up. Even advised me of my legal rights which I told him I already knew. Never happened again so the problem was solved.
Charged him 3 times what they were worth and the dogs were only being dogs. I liked those chickens but it's not like they were family.

Our feedlot is a mile from town. When I was a kid Dad would give town dogs that ran cattle 2 chances. The 3rd time it happened they met a 38-55. Always made me sad but now I understand. Our property and our livelihood

Don’t see any controversy here at all. Dogs killing livestock should be shot, and their owners, if located, should compensate for lost stock. Absolutely! It irritates me that the story doesn't portray the dogs owners as irresponsible and need to be held accountable.

Saw thos story on tv this morning it made the dog owners look like the victims upset my wife to the point she shut off the tv. She couldn't understand why the dog owner would even go on tv and act like they didn't cause this to happen. They sounded like fools.
Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

Once you think you've heard it all,go on a site that caters to this type of nonsense and brace yourself. You have no idea the lengths people will go to blame others ,instead of their mutts.Last winter a story came across my screen about a 3 yr.old boy(I think that was his age)that was mauled to death by 2 pit bulls in the neighbors fenced in yard. The boy was playing in his own yard, and apparently put his hand thru a break in the fence and the dogs got him.I couldn't believe the comments that were pouring in,and I'm not talking about a few,I'm talking lots of them! They crucified his mother for not being in the yard with him, calling her everything but a woman, some were even questioning the intelligence of the boy for putting his hand thru fence!Really? He was 3 for Gods sake! Then a rumor was floated he was waving a rag at the dogs and that infuriated them. They beat that horse for sometime blaming the child again, then it came out what was claimed was a rag was the boys mitten, they were in a northern state and it was winter.I couldn't believe it when I saw where a couple of people came out and said the boy got what he deserved, and of all the people commenting, only a couple had the guts to push back.I finally had enough, and said if those dogs were my neighbors and that happened to my family there would be two dead dogs no questions ask.I knew there'd be some push back to what I said and I wasn't disappointed. The ones that got me where the ones that said I should be the one shot. After I posted,SOME people backed me up,but believe me,we were outnumbered. It was a eye opening situation, personally if I had a livestock /dog problem I'm not sure how I'd deal with it anymore.Alot of these pet owners are completely unhinged.

One of the problems is that we as a society have been humanizing pets, especially dogs, for the last several years. It seems like many people are treating their dogs better than their children. I am now hearing several young couples stating that they have chosen to keep dogs instead of having kids.
Many of these same pet lobby folks are completely appalled if someone uses a dog for anything like working stock, pulling a sled, or hunting. In their eyes any dog that isn't a spoiled rotten house dog is being mistreated. Personally, I think it's cruel how so many people are now keeping working breed dogs cooped up in tiny apartments all day. You can't tell me those dogs wouldn't love to get outdoors and do the things they have been bred for generations to do.
These pet lobbies are gaining more and more traction across many states. I see them as a real threat to trapping in coming years.

I cant count on one hand the amount of my own personals dogs ive shot for just chasing live stock! let alone mauling one. chasing leads to mauling. live stock are way more important then dogs.Idiots with dogs like that should have to pay 75 dollars a lb for meat. A lady last week in our town was mauled by two very aggressive pits it was 4 days before they was put down! This lady was mauled so badly you could see her teeth on the opposite side of her jaw! One dog bit her pony tail pulling her face up while the other attacked! Dang good thing I wasn't driving by and seen that! Id be in jail for discharging a firearm in town multiple times. The local police wouldn't get out and help the lady for fear of those dogs. Our dog catcher a 90 lb woman gets out with a catch pole to get the dogs but two grow arse men with automatic pistols were scared!
LIVE LIFE LIKE THEIR IS NO TOMMORROW

Sounds like they need to find some different cops And I would have shot the dang dogs and dared any jury to find me guilty
