While I don't have any actual comparisons for other inland lakes, I doubt there is any epidemic in the making. I know I used to swim in Lake Superior a lot. Often at night, skinny dipping. I am still alive and suspect that cold water may have saved me from embarrassing myself more than once. Man who mistake shillelagh for fairy wand; see pixie dust, also.
