I found out freezing the apples for a couple days before grinding (thaw then shred) makes them soft. The cells break faster and release juice better which means a better yield of juice.

I pasteurize my juice (160 deg F for a couple minutes). Then ice bath the pot before pouring juice through a filtered funnel into A & W plastic half gallon jugs. I freeze everything and use as needed. I still have juice in the freezer from 2016.

How about this?

This
[Linked Image]
Or this
[Linked Image]
With this mounted to heavy duty frame
[Linked Image]
With this as the press basket
[Linked Image]

Would have to construct frame and add spout to drain pan

My concern is with the hole in the press basket riping or tearing mesh bag because the are holes vs being elongated holes.

I have a spare stainless steel sink I could easily attach garbage disposal to.

My concern with garbage disposal as grinder would be cleaning it. How would you sanitize it?

Total price of that gear to include 1hp disposal is 300$ before shipping and taxes. Still have to build frame.

I could go smaller on basket and hydraulic press

In it 30$ so far with tub and spout. Had everything else laying around from previous projects.

I'm gonna buy the Apple grinder for 130$ and add electric to it next year after we get the bugs worked out.

Instead of a Porta Power unit, (kinda spendy), Harbor Freight also sells a hydraulic log splitter that would be perfect. with little mods needed.

Apples go into the RV sink on top
Get ground up in the garbage disposal.
Get pressed with a 6 ton hydraulic jack
Strained through cheese cloth lined bucket with holes
Drain into plastic pail.

What kind of press set up do you have?

My set up looked very similar to the pic above. I bought some cotton pillow cases from the store and put my ground up apples into it before pressing. Worked slick. I think I made 3 gallons of juice from 1 or 1.5 coolers(120qt) full of apples in a couple hours.

I have heard if your disposal starts getting hot you can use some of the juice you have made to run with the apples during grinding.

For cleaning, I would just run the disposal and spray the hose in for a while. Cant say I would be to worried after that. What's the worst you could get? Some left over apple, cant be any more dangerous than how I pick them off the tree without cleaning before eating.

Boys are out in the shop deburing the pot after I put about 1000 holes in it.

Lol

They are happy to just use the power tools.

To answer your questions as best I can:

The disposal is a Waste King 8000. Horsepower, I don't recall, but, do believe it is 1 HP.

Cleaning is simple just run an bunch of clean water through it following the campaign. For the subsequent campaign start with a little chlorinated water, rinse it out, and you're good to go. I do not disassemble.

As for the press, that's it in the pic. Look carefully and you will see the jack in the image. Just put a wood plate over the mash and jack against the top bar.

Lol

See it now.

How does that wood frame hold up under the pressure?

Did 23 gallons today hot bathed and cooling off as we speak.

Got apples for free off clients.

It's on for next year! Will buy a shop press and set up a more permanent apple pressing station.
