I have never heard of them but I was on a small island in a 10 acre lake and there was a area about 8 ft x 12 ft that was littered with poop that was what seemed to me to be beaver poop. Anyone ever see this ?

Only place I have seen beaver scat is in the water Ditto. Are you sure it wasn't otter poop. A close ispection will verify. Saw dust, or fish scales and bones.

Only time have see beaver scat was in the water or washed up onto ice that was downstream of the lodge.

Same for me....only seen beaver scat in the water. Looks like a sawdust turd. I've got a pic somewhere of several beaver turds in a spring-fed creek on the upstream side of a beaver dam. Water is crystal clear....turds all over the bottom.

Could be that island is an area that was used during period of high water. Often when the upper Mississippi floods the beaver migrate into back water slews and CCC ditches until the water recedes. Areas outside their bank dens, or areas of higher ground, they used during the high water periods, will have left over droppings completely dried up and in eddies below bank dens. Could also be where a trapper was dumping beaver carcasses, for a bait station, and what you are seeing is stomach paunch. Eagles can easily spread it around that far, and 8-12' would be small for eagles.
Maybe a weathered porcupine toilet?
