James, I was at that convention but didnt make the meet and greet.

I met and had a nice conversation with Gerry Blair at the NTA convention in Rochester MN. I believe it was 1997 maybe 96.

As far as I know Bob Gilsvik is still alive. If Rally says he is, he is.

Another one I used to know who had some good books at the time was Laverne Israelson. Laverne has passed on to the trapline in the sky as well.

Don Hoyt. I think he was the NTA president back in the 1980s...I think. I don’t recall much about him other than he was the NTA president

Jim Helfrich. He used to write good articles. He and Carroll Black were partners for awhile and they put out a couple books together. He had a trapper supply business and produced good lures but that went broke and he may have gotten himself in legal trouble somewhere along the line. I believe he’s still alive and still traps somewhere out west.

Tex Isbell. As I recall, he was a chemist who developed a synthetic skunk essence as a cover scent and call lure back in the 1980s

Gerry Blair. He used to write very colorful articles for a number of publications. My wife and I used to enjoy reading about his adventures with a 10 gauge shotgun called something unprintable on Tman. I’ve heard he died. Has any organization put his old articles in print?

Bob Gilsvik. He used to write a monthly article for FFG. As I recall he published a couple trapping books. The last I heard he retired from FFG but then he was gone. Is he still alive? Does he still trap?

Any information on these people would be appreciated.

Carroll Black passed away in 2015. https://www.alexanderfhinc.com/notices/Carroll-Black

Jim Helfrich, another Ohio boy, I.M.O., was on the cutting edge of trap design for his time. I believe they were made in Korea... Somebody jump in here. He had a great beaver trap.

My favorite trapping authors are O'Gorman, Garold Weiland and Tom Krause. Garold wrote a great fox trapping book... This book got me to start fix trapping.... i was strictly a waterline trapper before.

Tom Krause was the editor for the Trapper for a time, and wrote a no B.S. book of Fox and Predator trapping.

I wonder what happened to these guys now. Are they still trapping? I'm 76 and when I see those 2 old timers on TMan, 'rat trapping through the ice in their 80's I want to get some bionic knees installed in me and get out on the ice!

Let me know about Craig, Krause and Weiland.

What happened to Dan Bishop from Wisconsin?

He traveled and gave fox trapping seminars.

George Wacha would post on here time to time. Anybody know how he is?

I always enjoyed Bob Gilsvik's articles. He didn't gloss over his misadventures and downright goofs. Always made me feel a little better... I figured if stuff like that happened to guys like him then it was OK if it happened to me too. Lol

Helfrich's traps were definitely not made In Korea. They were made in the good ol USA. I believe Weiland is gone, not going to swear to it tho.The rest are still around.

Talked with Tom Krause last week. Was going to stop by and say hi on my way to the Graham coyotes days. He was out guiding some fishermen.
