Rip Capt.
I'm sure some of you might have been a fan of his. I loved watching his show ,he once got a grizzly with homemade arrows, flint heads and a hand cut longbow. He holds several hunting and fishing records. After his spinal stroke he didn't let life keep him doing from what he wanted to do. It's was sad to hear yesterday he past away from a automobile accident. Tred did alot of charity work for kids. May you have calm following seas and the wind in your face on your next buck stalk. Godspeed

The HARD WAY, the BARTA WAY! I remember his shows well. A lot of self promotion, but it was fact based and the only promotion he got. When things finally seemed to be going well for him in life he got struck down by the spinal stroke. That sucked but he kept fighting. A very special guy. RIP.

I made his flint tipped arrows, and I can tell you he was a character to say the least. He called me a few years after his accident to tell me all the success he'd had with those arrows, it was a decent list!

One of his camera guys, named Klay Shorthouse, was a hoot too, he got sick after they went to Africa and passed away a few years ago way too young. Klay showed up at a buddies one night when we were about to head out spearing gar for a fish feast, and I think he had a head start on the gin, because we eventually made him recline on the center thwart and be still to keep from swimming with the gar.

My favorite Barta story - we were doing the segment on flintknapping at 3 rivers and I had given him the low down on the basics while we were off camera. We were all set up, he combed his hair (that was a serious thing for Tred!) and Klay said action. Tred looks right at the camera and says "So, Aerwick (New Jersey accent...) let me get this straight, the first thing we have to do is wemove the Kotex, is that right?" I turned and looked over at him kind of confused and said "Tred, if you find a kotex on it, you definitely want to remove that before you get started...." The camera crew lost it, and after we recovered, we went over it again and I think he said it completely different the second time. I have not watched it in something like a decade, so I don't remember how the final version was, but I remember that part.

In my few short dealings with him, he definitely "played the fool" in an disproportionate number of retold campfire stories.

He had the most important part - he was kind and sincere. I really enjoyed our last conversation and was touched that he took the time to tell me about the adventures he had with those arrows.

I couldn't stand that guy, yet whenever his show came on, I set the remote down (I never do that), and was riveted to to the TV screen. He and his show was different than any other before or since and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
His later shows in the wheel chair were hard to watch, yet inspirational beyond expectations. You don't quit until your last breathe, is what I took away from it.

RIP. Loved his show . I have dragged deer out of woods and fields , over hills and across rivers; and guys would say " an ATV would make that a lot easier", I'd always reply, doing it the hard way, the Barta way. I really liked his unapologetic attitude ; I remember one episode fishing in Alaska, at the end the boat was headed back and Tred saw a baby seal up on a hill and said " look at that, wish I had a club " I laughed myself to tears.

His was a refreshing show when compared to those shot on private hunting leases where animals were raised more like livestock than wild game, only to be shot from a box blind over a feeder with a crossbow.
He also fought against private land owners being allowed to land lock thousands of acres of public land. He pulled no punches when he he spoke of access to public lands for hunting and fishing.

I don't know anything about him personally. But, I always enjoyed his show. I most appreciated the way he considered any game fish or animal to be a trophy and regarded each based on the effort put into the pursuit rather than the size of fish or number of points on the antlers. I thought he had an inspirational, positive attitude, a great sense of humor (especially at his own expense), and a very down-to-earth outlook on life and sports. He seemed like the real-deal to me.
