I'm with taximan it's a black rat snake. Found 3 of em in the wood pile this year so far. Probably why the mice traps have been coming up empty.

I dont know if its the same kind we have here, but it is identical to what we call an oak snake or gray rat snake. They get very long here, i have killed them 8-10+ft long. Our black snakes are...black, juvenile to adult. Oak snakes like eggs more than they do mice here at my house so they dont last long once i find em in the chicken pen.

I miss catching oak snakes. Usually pretty docile, great for putting in cars, outhouses, bedrooms, scaring people.. laugh

It's very likely that rat snake just had baby birds for dinner.

Rat snake or what southern folks call a chicken snake. I would walk across a dozen cottonmouths to kill just one of the bird eatin critters. Two one about two weeks ago eating our baby chicks.
