Two entirely different cartridges,of course. If you don't need to shoot over 200 yds,the 45/70 hits hard and is a great cartridge for animals up to large moose size. The .243 can reach out to at least 300 yds, farther if your gun and load are accurate. It will also take bear and moose, with the right loads.
A good compromise caliber would be the .308.Plenty of variety in loads up to 180 grs and more, will reach out to 300 yds, easily, though not as flat shooting as the .243 ,but has more energy down range.

The question should be 45-70 or 30-30 as such a classic style rifle deserves to be chambered in an old classic cartridge. Just my 2 cents worth. Ohh and out of those two it would be the 45-70 in my case.

A 243 is not a great elk or moose gun but a 45-70 will kill a moose or a frog. I would go with a 45-70.

You guys are really under estimating the 243, there is nothing wrong with a 243 for black bear or moose, both animals are very easy to kill, 100 gr Nosler Partitions are the answer I agree. The right bullet and placement is key.

308 you can run a 165 or 180 all the time a learn just where it will hit at range if your looking for a very good all around rifle caliber. basic bullets are all that is needed and it works on everything in North America at appropriate ranges.
not sure how Canada is but in the US at least my area finding the exact load you like in 243 is sometimes a challenge but nearly every store has a 308 load that will work.

I agree a 308 is a very versatile calibre. At one time you could get a saboted 55 gr 22 cal varmint round for the 308. Are they still made?.

Ronald Reagan put pressure on Remington to stop selling accelerators in 7.62 (308) because he worried about using them in military style arms like ar10, garrands and m14's. There was no law passed but Remington went along.
