Hey all I run ss with cable. I usually try and pull them all if I can access them use the sxs winch or the pickup winch. Park directly over top and tug. Occasionally the cable breaks. Using 1/8". Was thinking about switching over to chain. #3. How do you guys like running chain on your disposables. I'm to cheap to just let them be in the ground when pulling. 1$Apiece gets expensive when running a lot. Let's hear your thoughts on the matter.

Why fight it? Just use rebar.

Super sandy soil. Have had many coyotes pump a 30" stake.

In certain areas I def use rebar. But at times it's easier to use disposables

I use #2 machine chain. Weld your S hooks or you might lose some when you pull them.
If you use the finned super stakes with the retrieval eye, you can use chain on the center eye and cable on the retrieval eye.
If you use chain on both eyes, you run the risk of having your retrieval chain falling down the hole. That is a pain in the back side.

Rebar, bad choice here, even 6-7' snare on a 30" stake can have problems here, a trap the 30" would be pumped out more than snares

I'm no expert by any means but the coyotes I did catch last year I had no problem holding with 2 cross-staked 18 inch rebar stakes. With that said, I have switched mostly to Wolf Fangs but will still run rebar in certain situations

We had super muddy conditions in december last year and I had no problem holding coyotes with crossed 20" and 24" stakes.
This was in flat picked muddy bean fields.
Earth anchors and other cable or chain stakes work awesome too. But here when I pull up my line in january the ground is frozen rock solid down to frost line, well below stake lengths. Rebar has been so much easier to retrieve than any other anchor method I've used here.
Chained stakes definitely had an advantage over cable at retrieval when I used those, but were still a pain in rock solid frozen ground.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I would not think 1/8 cable would break if the ground is that sandy. Maybe don't drive them so deep. Longer chain will stop a coyote from pumping stakes. If they can't pull up on it, they can't pump it. I have seen pictures of chain stakes that the hole was wallowed out to the point of them being pulled.

I've had #2 chains break when pulling at the end of the season and even in the spring with thawed ground. I now use #3 and haven't had any breaks, but I've had to dig some out - not fun. I'm starting to double stake more often now than in the past.

All I use is chain super stakes. Use #2 and #3 chain. I have bought super stakes and I have made my own super stakes. And I weld all my mighty S hooks shut along with my J hooks on the swivels. My chain and super stakes are connected to my traps with a crunch proof swivel and J hook. All welded. I usually leave my traps where I set them till spring thaw comes along. I just trip them and cover them somehow (dirt, sticks, debris, etc) and pull the super stakes after the ground thaws. I have never lost a trap doing this although there is always a first time..... and maybe not. I experimented with a quick connect coupler and a clevis type coupler to connect the trap chain to the super stake chain, that way I could pull my traps when the super stake was still froze in. But that was a hassle, to me anyway. I have a few piles of all different lengths and diameter re bar stakes that are mainly now used for snares and other duties. What ever works for you is what U should stick with. Don't be afraid to try something different for awhile.

I've gone to #3 chain on all my wolf fangs and super stakes. They still pound in fine and the chain don't break.

Yup...ran rebar next to chained super stakes for a few years. I found rebar is faster, less hassle and no maintenance. Went back to rebar 100%.

The only place I think they have any advantage over rebar is in sugar sand.....maybe.

And if you have to carry equipment any distance rebar is heavy especially if you are putting just say 4-6 sets in middle of a section. Cross-staking with rebar means 2x that many stakes and it plus traps, hammer, shovel, etc it's a load to carry in on foot. There in those situations I love disposables and earth anchors.
Otherwise for short hauls i use rebar. I dont have a utv i just walk or drive the field edge.
Does that help too???

I'm starting to think the same way,Calvin.I will probably be switching back, this year.I do have some stainless earth anchors in some semi-permanent cat set locations so I will use those still.By mid December, the ground is frozen too hard and too deep to get anchors in and I have to wait till Spring thaw to get any of them out.Rebar is not affected by any of these things.

I think I'm going to go back rebar also after these stakes run out .
The man that makes the driver that does hold up is saying price of materials and the labor is tough to make it pencil out..
My old style of rebar worked just fine for me years back.
