I found this interesting article on a wolf introduction onto an Alaska island, full of Black tail deer. Back in the 60s

Shows the big picture pretty well.

It also indicates that folks probably shouldn't get so wound up when their game department says that the wolf numbers are the same as they were 20 years ago. They can't out-populate their prey base and hope to survive unless they have a lot of alternate protein sources.
