From this Gunsmiths perspective, If it HAD TO BE A Remington, I'd get an older 700 or even a 788, but I'd shoot it first if possible or get a recent target. Being a barrel burner to start with, I go with something slower, or down load the 250. Several are at www.gunsamerica.com where you shop nationwide. Sadly, ruger #1's are iffy at best for accuracy, unless you hang the barrel, etc.

Thinking about getting a varmit gun... I have decided on a 22-250 since I already have the die set but was wondering if there was much of a difference in any of the Remington guns. They have a model 700 SPS varmit,SPS,VTR,VLS, model 7 predator and I'm sure there are plenty of model 700's and 788's out there. Too many different models. Anyone have any of these they would comment on. Guessing your talking new, your best bet is to buy a 700 action and have a custom barrel put on. Depending on what the gunsmith charges you to install the barrel, you won't spend any more money than a complete gun from Remington. Grice gun shop is just one that sells actions. https://www.gricegunshop.com/firearms/barrels-frames-receivers.html?manufacturer=273Alittle over 300 for a S.A. and Boyds sells a nice stock for 150-200, depending on style and they are nice. I pieced one togeather this way with a Krieger barrel for a thousand bucks, not much over a standard Remington from factory.

I bought a Savage xp hunter 22 250 a few years ago very accurate rifle right out of the box with factory fodder. I reload for it and its just a tack driver. Out of my safe of old 700's it what I take most of the time. I have set up a couple other savage axis or edge one was a 223 and the other was 243 both shot well. The 243 liked everything I fed it they had sent me 4 different brands of factory ammo and I had a few handloads of a friend. It was 3/4 -1/2 inch groups it just liked everything. J

I've had a 700 sps in 22-250 with the heavy barrell, great gun. It shoots dime sized groups regularly at 100 yds.
