Has anyone used catnip in a crushed leave form? It says to crush leaves and apply to object of attraction. If using this type of product how are you applying it to post etc.?
Could it be mixed with olive oil? I beleive there was a thread started on silver vine and olive oil was used.

According to Wikipedia, Nepetalactone is an organic compound, first isolated from the plant catnip (Nepeta cataria), which acts as a cat attractant. Nepetalactone is a bicyclic monoterpenoid, a ten-carbon compound derived from isoprene with two fused rings: a cyclopentane and a lactone. It belongs to the class of iridoids. The structure and the effects of the compound are similar to those of valepotriates. A number of isomers of nepetalactone are known.[1]
Nepetalactone was first reported in 1941 after it was isolated by steam distillation of catnip.[2]
The compound is also present in the wood of tartarian honeysuckle (Lonicera tatarica), shavings of which are often used in cat toys
I have bought and tried essential oil catnip with disappointing results. If the cat isn't nearby the best of lure is of no value. If the cat is nearby a snare is all I need. https://www.cat-world.com.au/all-about-catnip.html

I put a bag of crushed leaves from the pet section @ Wally World in a saucepan and a couple bottles of distilled water . Set it on the wood stove and let it steep added more water a couple times. Made a strong “tea”, checked it out on a friend’s two cats with a little of the original material as a controll The cats went bonkers on the leaves and on the liquid same reaction very strong rub and roll . Used a coffee filter to strain the liquid and put it in a spray bottle. Haven’t had a chance to test on wildcats.

Going way out on a limb with it this year. I added a small bag of crushed catnip (acquired from pet store) to a gallon of beaver meat and castor this summer. Planning on using some of this in back of cages and down dirthole sets to see if the combo of bait, castor, and catnip will have some appeal. Not a lot of cats around here but enough to make it interesting experiment. Jim

Thanks for the response. I'm going to use it and mix with olive oil and then use on a rubbing post. I want to see if there is any interest and maybe making it a stop on their territorial journey.

I grow my own catnip, and I don't even trap cats. I just use it to make tea and to give to the cat. It's super easy to grow, it's just a weed. It can be topped like pepper plants to give you huge plants with tons of buds. If you take care of it and fertilize it, it'll be really strong, almost smells like weed. Kinda looks like it too with it's huge buds all over. The nepetalactone is at it's highest concentration right before the buds bloom, so I pick it right when it just starts to flower. Then I just hang the whole plants in the basement and let em dry. It's way stronger than any store bought stuff, there's no comparison. The store bought stuff is weak and doesn't usually include all the buds and such, it's just leaves.

Interesting! I know it grows here in places (wild) but I haven't looked hard enough to find it yet.

Have it growing here..my cat for what ever reason ignores it..if I cut a chunk off and bring it into the house she goes crazy over it..
Purchased a liquid cat rub at the convention which I suspect has catnip in it as I can smell it my cat avoided it at first but after she got use to the smell, maybe it mellowed out some, she was bouncing of the walls and purred like crazy..I put it on a deck post where she hangs out but she never did any rubbing yet...
Now silver vine drove her crazy..was worried she was going to have heart attack...
Thought I was a good trapper until I started trapping coyotes...... Thought I was a good bowhunter until I targeted mature bucks....

I bought an ounce of silver vine at Saturdays convention, ambush, thinking it'll help me fill my bobcat tag. $14 an ounce is what I think it was. MTP said it doesn't take much at a set. They said it's not a call lure, but keeps them at the set longer.
