I have been asked to trap summer coyotes in a very large, fenced deer enclosure.

I am successful trapping coyotes during fur season, but have no experience trapping them during the summer months. I'm suspecting that different lures and sets are needed, to be most effective.

Would really appreciate any advice to maximize my coyote harvest within a 2-week period, starting now. I have lots of footholds and about 20 different types of lures in my shed. Guessing that baits would be a bad idea, with so many insects and the warm temps.

Please help asap if you can. Thanks!

Thank you, Ron!

I did try to do a search for "summer coyotes" before posting, but I didnt find anything good within the first 5 pages or so. The search utility rarely produces good results for me.

Thanks for those links, I really appreciate it.

dirthole set with dog hair or cat hair...the problem that you will have with lures, urine and bait will be the bugs. The deer will also seek out the salt in some lures messing up your sets...hair from rabbits, squirrels , feathers and lambs wool...

If you take any lure just a call lure . I would just set on trails and hang logs over your sets so the deer go over and coyote under . Put the lure up wind and up off the ground . I like to blind set my k9 it just gets it done faster . Coyote will go over the fence but once there meat drunk they will crawl under so might walk the fence . Work the edges is my number one rule summer time coyote

Look for dig-ins too. If you don't have snares, footholds can be used also. Also set near water. It's hot so they won't be far from water.

As Rick said ripe fruits work well but there are 2 problems with that...Ripe fruit attracts non-targets such as coons, skunks, grinners and even grey fox...I have caught yotes on ripe muskedines (wild grapes) but the yellow jackets and ants love them too at this time of year...I opt for hair or even feces from a male domestic dog or cat....Male because the female doesn't want her pups to get eaten or killed. Also male because the male yotes don't like to share their "core area" and are territorial.

1 important thing is to avoid catching fawns, as they may not be able to self release as easy in the summer.

blind sets---- snare the trails. Use the one you catch to attract the others by glanding and using part of the coyote. flat sets with the caught coyote glands/parts. Obviously use smaller-- #2 size traps, laminated to minimize
damage to non targets.
