Nice Nessie. Pontiac was my favorite. I think GM really screwed up when they dropped Pontiac and kept Buick. I don’t have any real old Pontiacs, but my dad had a GTO when I was a kid and I have a 99 LS1 TransAm.

I liked the Chevelle's better, more class and power, but still a nice ride you have.

Plebeian lol, that 396 SS was classier and would run circles around that little goat. To each his own though...

Didn't see any goats loosing to Chevelle's over this way. They were a poor mans Chevy over here, but still a beauty and awesome the #'s match, that's getting rare.

I'm a chevy guy, but i like anything ol' muscle cars. Wow and to find them, # 's matching is getting slim to none. And when you do get the $$$$$ ready. I wish my 57' chevy was # matching , but than again a 327 300hp. Beats a 6 cycliner any day.

Let me sugar coat this

Yes the muscle cahs of all types have their unique shapes and likes to each individual. And they all take pinstriping just fine grin

In seeing both caahs from head on, I just noticed the placement of the headlights.

Could it be .......a big paht of the attractiveness of the GTO is that its lights are in ovah/undah style ? As opposed to side by side ? Hmmmmmmmm.......I think that alone appeals to my shotgunning preferences grin

Boy, those are some nice cars.
Nessy, last time I was in New Hampshire there were a number
off crows on the edge of the road looking over a fallen comrade.
It seems as though they had caw, caw, caw down they had not yet mastered truck, truck, truck.

What is Boston speak for truck? That was prolly the problem!

I liked the 67 chevelles, but my favorite was the 65. Went to the digs in Great Bend Ks in early summer of 65, and a guy had a 375 hp 396 in a 65 that was going in the 11's. Pull the wheels out of the hole and carry them into second gear. That is one car I've always wanted and never got!

I am a Chevrolet guy, but when I go to a classic car show, I find myself enjoying the body styling of the other GM brands and walking right past the Chevelles. Plain Jane except on race day.

Fast was always more important than looks to me! Had a 57 chevy station wagon with a 375hp 396 in it when I got home from nam. It was ugly, but run, it did! grin

Lee, back in 1972 I had a chance to pick up a 67 Chevelle SS with a 396 4 speed for $800.
I was making I think $2.40 an hour pouring melted iron into sand molds at the local foundry,
Yep, that was $96 a week before taxes. Then again a case of beer was 6 bucks, same price as a new pair of Levi's.
knew that was not my destination but what does an 18 year old kid know?
Wish I would have bought that car, would of had it paid off last month.

LOL Zim

I've had lots of old Pontiacs

'69 gto, 400 ram air III, tri-power switched that to a 428 with RAV heads etc
67 Ventura, 400, 4 barrel, 4 speed, breaker less factory distributer, 8 lug wheels
65 gto 455SD with sequential FI, 5 speed
71 LeMans Sport, 400, 4 barrel, 4 speed
68 Lemans 350 2 barrel, red convertible
65 Tempest wagon, 326 HO, 5 speed
65 Tempest 326 HO, 4 speed,
and I'm sure there was more, just can't remember them all.

I also had a 67 Chevelle, Face facts, chevies were a step down from Pontiacs, the interiors were cheap, dash and gages 2nd rate. Any car can be made fast.

The year I graduated HS ('76) I had the 69 GTO at that time it had a RA III 400 with a tri power on it, my older brother had a '69 Z28, my younger brother a '70 Chevelle SS396 and my cousin who was living with us at the time had a '72 GTO with a 455HO.
We raced many times, The quickest was the '72 GTO, it was geared nicely with 3.90's, my GTO had highway gears, 2.73's, I was the fastest, on a long enough straight I caught and passed them all, the Chevelle 2nd quickest and the Z28 was way 3rd fastest.
After I switched to a 428 with RAV top end I also went to 4.10 gears then I killed them all easily.

My favorite was the '67 ventura, it just such a cool car, all original, bench seats, 4 speed. That car had a heater that heated up the inside so much you could cook a turkey in there!!

Old muscle cahs are cool regardless of make. I had a '63 1/2 Ford 427 4 speed that I wish I still had. You don't see many of these any more:

And this is what I drive now: This is the view that Nessmuck would get:

I really like GTO's don't get me wrong....just thought I would show some other species. I have had a kid get out of his mother's car, walk back into the restaurant where I was sitting and tell me how much he liked my car. Good to see kids are still interested in them. By the way, the Mustang is faster than the 427.

Had a 67 GTO as well plumb with white vinyl top. Ex wife got it in divorce. Thing would pass anything on the road except a gas station. Had the 400 with 4 speed and 5:13 gears when I got it. Got the bright idea to put headers on it along with brushed aluminum side pipes. No idea how many times burnt my leg on those and oil changes sucked. Also cooked starters.

Today is the muscle car era.....How is 50+ year old technology going to keep up with the new stuff ? I can’t even beat a new Honda Accord ....but I sound way better....and look a whole lot better too.....and there is nothing like driving an old muscle car. My friends have the 700 hp Hel Cat....The 550 hp Mustangs...Those cars do nothing for me....and I don’t even notice them on the roads...they just blend in with the rest of the traffic...

Agree on can't beat em but still sound and look better. All the new ones don't have the character the old iron has. Like my old 77 Shovelhead the old ones will only keep getting worth more while the new will depreciate.

I understand what you are saying Nessy. My first pickup was a 48 International KB1 with a flat head straight 6, less than a hundred horsepower for sure.
My current Ram is a half ton also, but it has 395 horsepower and an eight speed auto tranny.
It gets better mileage than the International ever did. LOL Around 20 mpg if I keep my foot off it.

I had a new 67 Camaro, 396/375hp/4sp/410 positrac rear. The extra 50 hp was an added $500. to the cost of the car. It was butternut yellow. It was too much car for such a young fella as me - lol. I was 18 when I bought it. My immaturity with it got me two tickets, and then I went into the AF.

[Linked Image]

Then not long after Rhonda and I were married we got a 1964 corvette. It was a little 327/250hp/automatic turboglide, but it was a lot of fun. It looked a lot like this.

Boss, that camaro has the rare L78 375 hp 396 , only 1138 out of 220,000 camaros were made in 67 with that option. That car is worth a ton today

I wish I still had it, but I had to sell it before going into the AF in June 1968. Payments were only $96 a month, but as an Airman, I was making less than $100. a month.

I never cared for the GTO, nice looking car though, I had a 66 Chevelle SS ragtop with 4 speed. Never raced a goat with it, but it would go too fast. I had it up to 125 a couple of times, it had more I didn't. I like all the old 60 cars, you could tell one from the other, not like now.

I like the looks of all of them but you guys are way to fast for me. My first car was a 67 Fairlane. Looked real nice. Shackled up with new set of retreads and used Crager mags with a 289 under the hood.

First car after getting a real job was a 79 Trans Am. Was still slow as it came with a 301.

I had a 67 GTO with the 400 and Hurst shifter in Plum Metallic color. Sure wish I still had it, lots of good memories with that car.

And AC too.

AC was VERY RARE in my neck of the woods, of all the old Pontiacs I owned only one that had AC, bought it cause it had lots of rare options making it a great car to part out.

Pontiacs, as mentioned were a step up from chevies, lots of plane jane chevies around back in the day. All the farmers bought them cause they were cheap.

I had a 67 Tempest and a 67 LeMans Too.
Bought both of them to part out.
The LeMans was optioned nicely, 326, 4 speed, console, rally gages, posi, Red with Black interior. Lots of desirable parts on that one.

One of the neatest things about '60's cars was the absolute amount of options available. New Vehicles now days have a fraction of the options available back in the day.
You could option out the same car to be a luxury sled to a stripped out race car if wanted too.
Things that are common today were options, backup lights, rear view mirrors, radios, power brakes etc etc etc.

Boss that's one sweet vette. I've always wanted a vette from the 60's especially a stingray.

My uncle (dads brother) had a chevelle SS with his and her tranny parked in his yard for years. My dad would always offer him good money for it he wouldn't sell it to anyone. One day some guy buys it for $500.

My mom's brother had a fairline parked for years he refused to sell it even if offered several thousands one day I got home from school he had sold it for $500. My brother was heart broken

That 302 I$ very rare, and underrated. Shorter stroke of 283 crank with 4" bore. Quick RPMs.
Tell him don't scatter it like most did the first two years of production.

I wish we all still had all of them, but who could afford that.

I had a ford,,, once.

The Z302 Camaro was garage kept since the mid 70's He did not beat it and now it has classic tags on it so it gets used a few times a years To add to it he has a 1975 Blue Honda 750 motorcycle in running order . That would give the Camaro a run for it's money in the 1970's .Those 750 Hondas had a lot of get up and go in them .I know and I am lucky to be alive to tell about it

I have one those old blue Hondas here in nice original condition, but it is a smaller cc.

The 302 was made 3 years, 67 the first , only 500 some. I think half of those cars wrecked in first year.
The engine Id code is DZ. I had a 69 but not Z.
I made money on all those old muscle cars. Unlike today we lose on them all lol.

Yes nothing like paying$ 45,000 for a truck that is now worth $15000 less a year later My 2 older brothers had so many muscle cars I do not remember them all .A 65 Plymouth Sports Fury with I forget the engine followed by a similar 66 and 67 model .Other brother had a 68oChevy. Chevelle with a 396 and another with a 427 .Do not remember the years but one was blue and white and the other was green and white .Also one was a convertible He also had a red 442 Olds plus several other cars . They both owned more cars in the 10 years from age 16 to 26 than I had in my entire driving career. As for the 750 Honda ,zero to 100 was easy .If you wanted to go faster you needed a longer piece of highway .I knew were they where . By the way lots of very nice cars show here I enjoyed all the pictures

back in the early 70s my neighbor had a 1970 gto with 455 with a 4 speed. he worked 3rd shift at a factory. I would sit out on my parents porch to watch him drive by at nights on his way to work. couple years later he gave me a ride in it. tried buying that car from him several times but wouldn't sell. sold it to a former classmate of mine few years later. my classmate let me drive it one night. later when I asked my neighbor why he didn't sell it to me his answer was " I was afraid you would kill yourself with it". years later it was destroyed in a garage fire.

Best man in my wedding owned a 1965 GTO, yellow and black convertible with 3 deuces and a 4 speed with a 389 engine. We had some wild rides in that rig!! He sideswiped a Telephone pole in 71 with it and that ended that era. Tires did not last too long either!

You guys are making me second guess selling my 67 firebird. Thought it had a 326 original when I got it before I went into the USMC, and recently pulled it out of storage, only to find out someone previously swapped that 326 out for a 71 350. The 350 was dead tired so I upgraded the motor to a 67 400 325hp. Now I can send smoke signals if I need to. Anyhow, been back and forth on keeping it, and am leaning towards getting it to someone who can appreciate it more than my barn does.

Never could afford a chevy , had a 69 Mach 1 w/a cobrajet in it .
Several troopers tried to catch me but they couldn't come close !

My dad had a 59 Edsel he bought new just before i was born , I'd love to find it .

Those classic / muscle cars were and still are the best automobiles ever made .

Wow !

Its estimated that only about 150 of the 1138 were rag tops .

How many were butternut ? Very few i suspect

I believe the 410 rearend was also special order so you may have had a one only

Im thinking a $200,000 dollar car today if it survived

LOVE old Pontiacs, Nessy! While I had a Chevelle, a buddy had a GTO and I learned a lot about working on cars on that one. Now I supposed about everything I learned from my gearhead buddies, from a tune up, oil change, etc. to changing drum brake shoes has all been obsolete for a long time! Still love a goat!
