Got my change back from my bill at the local diner this morning,

and as is my habit, I scanned the coins for silver, wheat pennies,

and any other coins of numismatic interest.

Much to my dismay, I found Queen Elizabeth the 2nd staring up

at me from my palm.

Not being familiar with this particular coin, I flipped it over and

I was pleasantly surprised to

find the Canadian Beaver prominently displayed on the reverse

side along with the five cent denomination.

No doubt it is worth somewhat less than 5 cents, but it was good to

see Canadians see fit to remember their heritage in their coinage.

It would be much cooler if having the beaver on our nickel didn't make every single clueless urbanite believe that the beaver enjoys some sort of protected status in Canada. If I had a nickel for every time some dimwit said to me "You can't kill beaver, they're our national symbol so they are protected" I'd be a millionaire.

You could also substitute the "Canadian" Goose in that sentence... I always like to ask them how they know the goose's citizenship

Just happy to be here.

Yeah and there is technically no such thing as a "Canadian goose."

Is it not fitting that your nickel was the Bison.

There are 3 years that a V was on the nickel.

What year was it , some are made out of 98% silver.

Oh the Queen has only been on it since 1952.

The BUFFALO was on our Nickel until they finally peeled the last

hide, and cut the tongue out of the last, wild, free-range beast.

After that, they started calling them Bison and Thomas Jefferson took

over the Top spot on our nickel !! laugh

My girlfriend, while I was in college, lived in Upstate New York during the summer. She worked in a grocery store. They took in an incredible amount of Canadian coins at the grocery store she worked at. The cashiers were encouraged to pass any Canadian coins they took in back out as soon as possible. They got in trouble if they had more than $5.00 of Canadian money, when they turned in their drawers at the end of their shifts. She had an old woman yell at her once for giving her change back in entirely Canadian coins.

I'm constantly handing Canuck coins back

to the store clerks, waitresses, and bank tellers asking them

in a joking but serious manner: "Really now.......Do I look Canadian to you" ? laugh

Most laugh, roll their eyes, and hand me back REAL American coins. laugh
