Only 18 states in the union pull their own weight and helpbthe rest of the freeloaders.

I think the other 32 states need some serious reform or get cut off.

What state do you live in? Anyone surprised by the list?

I'm surprised by Pennsylvania and Ohio. They produce so much I would've thought they were givers and not takers.

KS produces a lot but it has a lot of agriculture. Ag puts a lot of states into the parasite column.

I was thinking of that the other day.

I was at the grocery store for milk. It was on sale for 1.49 a gallon. No way it can be produced and sold at the amount. I'm not sure of the true cost of milk but its got to be close to $5.

Also....maybe if food was more expensive people wouldn't waste as much.

This is only one slice of a larger picture. There are other ways states contribute to the overall health of the nation other than tax dollars, like providing items for subsidized federal programs and materials for infrastructure projects. So they very well could be breaking even in other areas, we just don't see it in this picture because it only examines one issue.

The main thing that should jump out at you off of this graphic is the data for Washington D.C.

Good point and nice catch.

Yes, but that shouldn't be surprising. The federal government is pretty much Washington DC and parts of Virginia.

The thing that immediately jumps out is that in 18 states the people are stupid.

seriously this graphic is kinda BS in that it shows nothing except the originators bias. The country does not depend on taxes to operate at all the entire economy of this country is a Ponzi scheme based on imaginary money and anything that suggests taxes do anything but keep track of the game is just propaganda. Less than 25% of Americans are not government dependents. Probably each of you has income from the Federal government. More than you realize, as an example the cheap milk mentioned above, but also if the government purchases any of the products your company makes or transports. Or if you are a teacher or policeman or postal worker, your taxes do nothing to off set your government income- your entire salary was in the tax coffers before you took it out and if you put it all back it would only be a beark even situation.

I can barely read any of the numbers. How many of the "free-loading" states went for trump last election?

I checked. I would not have guessed that: Thirteen out of the top 15 states found to be most dependent on the federal government voted for President Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. Ten out of the 15 least dependent states voted for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Funny how some people climbed onto their high-horse on another thread saying how some people just can't get along because they bring politics into everything. I really thought it'd take longer than a day or so until they started.

Last time that chart was put up, there were lots of reasons mentioned why some states required more tax dollars than others. Western states are mostly fed lands with small population, similar to mid-western states where it's lots of Ag. land.
Military bases in states with little manufacturing/population and so on.

Then there are states that are packed to the gills with people and many companies having their headquarters there.

I was surprised by the facts. And I thought PA would get much more back than we pay in. We do come out a little ahead at the expense of others.
We have an older population than many states and we have more than our share of generational welfare.

Income tax is driven by................TAXABLE INCOME!! And offset by deductions and credits.. Hence tens of thousands and more pages of targeted tax codes.

I've learned enough thru the years to now know that I don't know enough. KNOWLEDGE IS FREEDOM.

Some of y'all seem awfully defensive.

Be more like Wisconsin...or.....gulp ...New Jersey.
