Also....what's the point of Hawaii? Its the pacific version of Puerto Rico. Only reason its a state is because of WWII same thing with Alaska.

Hey, Alaska may be on the list of freeloader states, but we wouldn't mind the chance to get rid of all the federal interference and go it alone.

Another thing that the graphic doesn't illustrate is....as Waggler touched on.....demographics and federal installations.

When you take a state like Alaska with less than a million people, the tax base is going to be small On the other hand we have somewhere between 7-10 federal military installations. In addition to that we have Native American populations that receive federal dollars for various reasons. I suspect AZ, NM, MT, WY are similar.

New Mexico has consistently topped the list, usually among the top three, for reasons that white17 cites. One of the largest factors is that New Mexico is a border state -- immigration is a big draw of federal funds. White Sands Test Facility and Los Alamos National Laboratory are in New Mexico; they have quite a bit of federal land and Native American reservations.

Remember that these are per capita numbers, and demographics (population numbers and characteristics) play a large role. Here's a more recent breakdown from the Rockefeller Institute of Government -- first map is balance of payments in millions of dollars and the second is balance of payment per capita.

Connecticut is definately a state where those who choose to live on welfare want to be, because they get everything all taken care of.

Even more astonishing is the huge incentives for people to turn their residences over into rental property for the sake of state housing, they give you way way more than what the place is worth because it is understood that it will be destroyed...

My neighborhood is on the fringe, most of the homes are rented out to welfare - nice homes too !! - and it's a shame that it has come to this.

On the other hand, it's even more of a shame that all the industry which existed here 30 - 50 years ago is now just a distant memory - so when people say Get A Job, "where??" is an acceptable response as our population has skyrocketed while the jobs market has crashed.

The thing is, I always wondered what happened to the rabble that lived in Manhatten back in the 1980s, as it seems once 1995 rolled around they were all gone.

Gone to Connecticut ??

big George lots of jobs here. not enough people to fill them all. been 10 years or so since the last time I was in ct. seems nationwide though the more crowded someplace is the more problems there are.

its no secret why welfare is so popular. when you reward irresponsible behavior you get more of it.

Oil companies are a good example of one state getting credit for taxes paid when other states are responsible for some of the income.

Look on the back of an oil jug and look at where their headquarters are. Most are in Houston tx. but the oil comes several different states.
Same with grain from the mid-west.
Fed taxes might be paid in New York or Texas but the grain comes from say, Kansas and the oil from Pa or Alaska.

Big George?

Get a job! Where?

Everywhere in the midwest good jobs too,

Every contractor I talk to can't find enough help and it's going to get worse because no one wants to work anymore , be able to pass a drug test or have a drivers license.
