Missoula is alright, afar as visiting family and friends. I believe you would enjoy the area.

Do it, Missoula needs your influence, relatively speaking it's not that bad. You can get out of town and into some great country pretty fast.

I disagree, as Chief of Police you will serve at the pleasure of the Mayor. Seems like in that situation he's a far left leaning fella. If you are a Conservative you will be scrapping everyday. If you do not try for the job you know there is no way you will get it.
If you do try you may or may not get it.
If it is offered to you, you can visit the area and evaluate the situation and make the decision to move or not.
