How many pounds per acre do you guys plant. I am going to be using inoculated seed and broadcast it . I will also be mixing in some wheat. What I have read is 4 pounds of pure clover seed per acre or 9 pounds of inoculated seed as over 50 percent of the weight is inoculant. Does this sound about right.

3 - 4 lbs/ac is a good seeding rate to use in your drill.

Ladino seeds are tiny and there are a lot to a pound. 4 lbs. would be plenty. Some inoculants will make up 35% of the weight, so increasing the rate to about 6 pounds would get you the same lbs. of seed, however inoculated seed has a higher germination rate, so in theory you could just go 4 lbs. either way. I have had good luck with this rate.

Also watch the depth, be careful, less than a 1/4 in.

6 pounds sounds about right to me. What I have read is that it is important to get a thick stand established to help control weeds.

absolutely I modified my drill many years ago to drop clover, alfalfa and rape seed on top and followed with a cultipacker this gave me my best stands and I set at 4 or 5 pounds/acre this was worked ground my father-in-law cultipacked before seeding and after to keep seed from going to deep in loose ground and he was a life long dairy farmer

When I mix with wheat I plant the wheat first due to planting depth. I till the wheat in and then drag the plot to firm the seed bed. I then broadcast the clover and drag again to get it to look like a baseball infield and clovwrnwill not be over 1/4” deep.

What is your goal? As you are broadcasting it, depth is not an issue.

I have been planting clover for over 30 years. The picture above has about 6 different varieties of clover. Mostly different ladino varieties. If you want a thick stand using inoculated ladino seed you need more than 8 pounds of ladino seed per acre. This plot probably has 15 lbs. of ladino and 10 lbs. of Crimson seed equivalent per acre. This is only half acre plot.

The clover didn’t have much of a chance with 20 or more deer using it ever day.

I have heard to broadcast anywhere from 3 to 10 pounds per acre. My main objective is to get a thick stand to help weed control. The area I am going to plant is currently fescue. The plan is to till it three times and then broadcast the clover with a 4 wheeler.

I would glyphosate the fescue first before tilling. Spray now, spray again in 10 days and then till it under. Fescue will be stimulated by tillage unless you are deep tilling and literally plowing it completely under - but I would still spray it first. P and K spread will also help the clover get established. Have you soil sampled?
