Most reliable that I have been around were the block heaters. They circulate by convection. Down side is when have to replace one you will have to drain a lot of coolant.

This truck don't have one. But it needs one now that it's in a colder state!
I've never installed one. So looking for opinions on type of them.
I'll drain the coolant if I have to!

I run the block heater in my 2000 7.3. I also use battery blankets on both batteries when it gets real cold. I am lazy and just leave it plugged in over night when it starts dropping below 0. Been able to start it at -45 a few years back. I have a buddy that used to work oil fields in ND and got a brand new Dodge. He had block heater, coolant heater, fuel heater , and battery blankets. Said it was the best thing he ever did. Get in and already warm air blowing.

I also support the freeze plug block heater. Helps tremendously also if you can park it inside a building.

I would definitely go with a frost plug type. The oil being warm helps, but if the cylinders are warm it's better for a diesel.

Block heater Brian !!
Another route in ADDITION to block heater is a quick drain on the oil. Drain it into a 2 gallon can at night and put it on the stove in the morning. Pouring HOT oil into that engine makes a huge difference. Holds 5 gallons of oil

I picked up 100 clients in a week two years ago due to bigger companies not being able to start trucks. Then not being able to run once they got them started because hydraulics were frozen!!!! I was just running Ford 350s with 6.0 at the time and had block heaters. So no big deal here! But the bigger companies didn't get some areas picked up for 6 weeks! I don't even wanna entertain that thought!
