Has anyone tried adding any skunk essence to BTO as a lure? If so, how did it perform?

I made my first pint of BTO this year. I've used it before as a lure though, and thought it performed pretty well. It's a mild smell though, and in freezing weather, it seems to have less attraction. So wondering if a touch of skunk might carry the smell better during cold weather? I know skunky lures do tend to work well for me in the more extreme temps and conditions.

Wouldn't it be easier to simply explain what sweet skunk is, instead of trying to find out in the archives?

and yes cliff you've used it as well. but didn't realize it. bto and yote glands work better. Skunky bto takes it into the ldc realm

I don't know what grawes is calling sweet skunk but no way its a natural product of skunk essence. Essence on his site is the same price per ounce as 4 ounces of sweet skunk. So if "sweet skunk" contains essence its a small amount.

What Russ carmen called "aged musk fixative" (page 31) in his book is what some on here are calling sweet skunk. What Carmen wrote about involves aging for several years of full skunk pods. doesn't make sense that a product that takes years to render down would sell for less than the fresh unaged product.

I think most use empty pods to make sweet skunk for the fact that the essence is too valuable to use in sweet skunk as Danny stated. The way I made it I used full pods. Personally i prefer sweet skunk over straight essence in most cases for several different reasons.

I use empty pods. I cover them with white wine and let them age for two years. This is how Dave Edwards did it, and I really like the end product. It has a nice sweet mildly skunky smell. I don't sell this product, but use it in some of my formulations.

We use it in several formulations and it is a very good ingredient or straight in the fall or winter. Good to spice up some baits as well as needed. We age 2-3 years and hold some longer until we need it. We sell a lot of it, and more the last few years as folks find out about its value.

Thanks for the explanation on the sweet skunk. I like what I'm hearing about it, so I think I'll try to order some.

Tony, wasn't sure what all you've done with the BTO you've been providing me over the last few years. I know some has been a little different from others, but all of it has worked. It was one of your lures that really made me think about ways I could use skunk to spice up some stuff for the colder temps.
