I don't feel like it affects them enough or at least in a consistent enough of a way for me to worry about the moon phase.

Others may have far better info on your question then I do, but I feel that there are several natural occurring events that trigger animal movement and the moon phases are but one, but even if they cause movement, from my experience the moon phases pale in comparison to a big low pressure system any time of the year. I can watch the backyard bird feeder and see how the coming of a storm impacts activity tremendously.

I've tried many times to figger it out. Just when I think I have it, it changes.

I looked into that years ago. I bought the book on it (can't remember the name). It went through things quite extensively explaining everything. It came with a little dial that you could put on the year, day and month to show what phase the moon would be in and what the animal movement would be like. I read everything and tried things for a season. I found no real validity in regards to it. I would go so far to say that, for the most part, it's hokum. It may play a small part but a very small part. The weather, seasons, food sources and time of day play the biggest roll as far as game movement.

I pull all of my traps during the full moon and reset them after it has passed. Doesn't everyone? Nothing kills hunger pangs in an animal like the unrelenting, searing blowtorch-like scorch of a full moon burning all night...

The solunar feeding times are based off of it and this summer my cell cams have proven it true. I’ve had deer feeding at 2pm in 97 degree temps with a heat index of 107.

I agree the Moon phase and the pressure systems make a real difference. Best though to have your sets working at all times.

Blacktail deer, especially mature bucks, are extremely nocturnal. Trying to hunt them after a long moonlit night is almost futile for most hunters. You need to know how to kick them out of their beds, then how to get back onto them after you've heard them crashing through the brush.
Moon phase? I don't know about that, but hunting them after a night of no moon is much more productive for most folks.

Ya you won't see me doing that, no need for it
Seems like deer hunting sucks after a full moon

Can't help with animal behavior, but my Wife is a night shift nurse at a care home, and when there is a full moon, the residents get pretty squirrely. eek

Pa,
When I bowhunted seriously I started using the moon guide it was pretty much perfect on the times deer feed.

When the full moon is up all night I catch less. The longer it is dark at night (no moon) the more I catch. other things have an effect also as was mentioned. Like cloudy all night. Any of you guys that run coon dogs have seen it also. Even on a full moon if its dark and cloudy dogs will tree coon in trees without holes lying out on a limb. When the moon is bright its hard not to look at den trees all night.

If I'm going out of state I want the dark of the moon to hit on the half way part of the time I plan to be gone.

Those days you see deer out early of an evening are the nights catfish bite the best

Chas3457-Yep the week leading up to full moon brings the squirrely ones out.

Penn State just did a study on deer about this and it did not find much change in activity around fullmoon. Barometric pressure falling seemed to have a lot more effect on deer activity.

my experience is similar to wagglers, but with whitetail.

it seems to me, when the moon is fuller, they are able to get around better at night and have less reason to move during the day.

on a new moon, its tougher for them at night, so they have to move more in the day.

I believe in moon phase effecting animal movement ,and yes i hunt by it ,kill a nice deer every year because of the right moon . fish, can, garden and even dig post holes in the right moon phase. but i am from KY. just learned that way. Some say the moon means nothing , but it can sure control oceans and other.

I used to read all that was written and try and use it for deer hunting...after many years, the only thing clear is Sleep in for a few days right before, and righ tr after a full moon. Ive killed many bucks around late morning durring those phases.

I can tell you I love night fishing walleyes during a full moon. It doesn't matter what time of year.
