we literally heard the Pentagon get hit...didn't know what it was or what was going on. (we were pulling into DC to Washington Hospital Center for my dad's impending by-pass surgery.)

my sister was working in Somerset County, and my brother-in-law was working in NYC.

On my morning break at work. Service writer popped his head in and asked what was taking so long and got to see the 2nd plane hit. Didn't get many cars fixed that day.

Had just gotten home, very early that morning, from a successful bear hunt. Got it all in the freezer and went to bed as September 11 is our wedding anniversary and we had planned on going out that evening. Got up for work and as I was getting dressed the first plane hit. Came out and watched the news and saw the 2nd plane hit. I looked at my wife and said "We're under fricking attack!" Quickly put together as much ammo as I could before I had to go to work. After I got home we canned our dinner plans and packed survival gear, camping gear, guns, etc. just in case. Made sure both vehicles were gassed up and we had a wad of cash available.

It certainly was a terrible time and thing to watch. What was most disconcerting to me was the uncertainty of what might come next and whether I would be ready to deal with it.

I was showering, getting ready for an afternoon shift at the Chrysler plant. Listening to the morning comedy radio show when they started to talk about this. I remember thinking (briefly) "This is NOT funny, in fact it is quite inappropriate"... then I quickly realized it was no joke.
I watched the news in a daze for about an hour before calling in to confirm that our shift was not cancelled (it was not)
When we got there, several American employees from the day shift had simply chosen to stay and not attempt to cross the border and go home. We built one minivan and then the assembly line stopped. Everybody was in shock I think. They kept us there for 4 hours before cancelling the shift and sending us home.
I had a long drive home (50 minutes) and it was a strange, lonely ride home. I remember being so relieved when the Via Rail train went by, reminding me that the entire world had not stopped turning.
I also remember going outside specifically to look in the sky and see it with no airplanes or contrails, something I'll (hopefully) never witness again.

Just happy to be here.

Got real sick of Lee Greenwood's god bless the USA because it was on every radio station and that's all I had to listen to for the 7 hour drive back... news, or Lee Greenwood.
Waited a couple weeks then when flights resumed flew back out and wowee was the security nuts that first half year or so after that.

lee greenwood had to be part of the CIA. That is the ONLY thing they played during my basic training at benning. The drill sgts kept it on repeat during in processing and in most of buidlings. That song has to be part of some dark CIA mind control stuff, that or breaking someone mentally. I LOATHE that song and would kick ol lee right in the sack if i ever meet him.

I was in high school social studies class when the first plane hit. All the football team went to the coaches office and watched the second plane hit. School was pretty much shut down for that day. I knew that day i would join the army and volunteer for the next smoking train to wherever that attack came from. The US army obliged...and kept sending us back, over and over.

I was putting a new roof on a house and heard the first plane on the radio. Like everyone else, I assumed it was just an accident.

I left the worksite to borrow a tool from my dad. The worksite just happened to be down the road from his place. My parent's had the TV on watching the news reports. As I walked into the living room, the second plane hit and we all knew at that moment that it was not an accident.

A very close friend of ours worked in one of the buildings at world trade. I think it was building 6 but I'm not sure. For no reason at all, she was running late for work. Her husband heard news of the first plane on the radio on his way to work. He called his wife and told her to just stay home because traffic was going to be terrible in lower Manhattan because a plane just hit one of the towers. She called out that day. Her building had all of the glass blown out on the side facing the towers and all of the debris and dust made it impossible to even walk through the building.

A friend of my wife had a fruit and vegetable stand at the weekly farmers market at the base of the towers with her boyfriend. He farms down here in south jersey but went up to NYC once a week with his truck for the farmer's market. When the first plane hit, they left the area on foot and planned to come back for their truck later in the day when things were less crazy. They either saw the second plane or heard about it. He thought more planes might be coming so they started toward the Brooklyn Bridge and walked to Brooklyn to get out of Manhattan.

Working in a welding shop and watched the second hit.Blood of Heroes

Still, if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than live as slaves. Winston Churchill

Finishing a garage floor in Paola KS. I seen the plains doing u turns in the sky, but didn't have a clue what was going on until the concrete truck driver told me on a footing pour a little later. We dumped out the footing and called it a day, went home and watched the news for the rest of the day.

We helped out on the tarmack for a bit because not all planes had a gate, some people walked from plane to drop stairs. Once the tarmack was cleared ( our area ) we went up and I was at the very end of one of the terminal wings. There was a line of maybe 20 of denvers finest and a mix of others, FBI, ATF etc who made a solid line and cleared absolutely every living thing and package out as they went towards the main terminal. Checked all stores, bathrooms, stairways as they went then sealed it off.
I stood then in the main terminal where there were giant televisions showing the coverage. I will never forget all the tears as the crowds watched. They were still showing unedited coverage of all the innocent people jumping rather than burn in the buildings. With every person who leaped you could hear and feel people's hearts fall around you.
For some of us more hardening of the heart.

Osky

Northern Manitoba on a caribou hunt. Outfitter's wife called on a satellite phone to let us know. Stayed in camp a few extra days since planes weren't allowed to fly.

I was in bed with a migraine headache and doing whatever it took to not get sick to my stomach with a damp wash cloth over my eyes when the first plane hit I got up and put my flag out on the front of the house I flew a flag every day since and like so many others I was on the fight I shed more than a few tears for those who didn't make it out of those buildings or airplanes.
