Maybe Trump has gotten their attention or maybe they simply need our agricultural products to feed their population.

The Chinese watched the Dem. debate and realized they will still have to deal with Trump after 2020.

Yep . I said the same thing about oil years ago . Let the arabs eat the stuff. Treat them like we do our farmers . LET US TELL THEM what we will pay for it !!!!!!!!!!!

But having a hard time figuring out how this tariff stuff works. Ok , if we charge china a tariff the US citizens have to pay the cost. BUT if the U.S. charges china a tariff the producers of the product (soy beans , corn , ag products) have to take less for it AKA farmers .. HHMMMM sounds like 2 different formulas to me. Or maybe someone is lining their pockets !!!!!

LOL!

If we can wait them out, they need us more than we need them. Glad to finally have a president that doesn't want to give the U.S.A. away.

More winning!

Wait a little while, James and/or grackle will be along to explain to us dumb conservatives that this has nothing to do with Trump.

Eh...wot?

China's swine farms have been devastated. Over 100 million lost to disease. Bad for them, good for our farmers.

So China is buying from themselves as they bought the largest pork producer in the US under Obama's watch.

It is more practical than political. The Chinese have around 400 million hogs they feed, and the last year they have killed over 100 million of them to stop the spread of the Asian Swine Flu, so they are short of pork and yes the lean pork contracts on the CBOT have gone up $5-$7 per CWT over the last two day. Soybean will follow as their herd grows as they use Soybean Oil meal and dry whey powder to feed protein to their swine. Milk jump a lot too reflecting the potential dry whey sales. I hope we don't find political ways to screw this up.

Exactly right !! And it's a fortunate thing for farmers and Trump also. It gives him just a tiny bit of wiggle room in the corner he has boxed himself into with these tariffs

It all comes down to who could do the longest without the other. Trump gambled that we can, and i believe that also.

Just took someone with nads to right the imbalance in trade that was hurting us bad. I think we were conditioned to believe we had to take these raw deals from China.

The reason they are dropping tariffs(hoping Trump would do the same) was so they could celebrate the CCPs 70 year anniversary next month and not look bad. Trump should of kept the pressure on. Would of made them look bad if pork prices went up then. Chinese love their pork.

Too bad many thing in days and minutes. One has to remember that we are dealing with a culture and policy makers where a generation is not a long time period. As poor as many of us like to think the Chinese may be compared to us they have been a culture for 15 times as long as we have and we register 80 year old buildings so they are preserved because we think they are historical.

China and Brazil are the largest owners of hogs already in the US. The US is no longer the leading owner of either beef or pork production - we have sold those commodities out and foreign interests control the majority. Though American farmers are on paper raising them........they are raising them for foreign governments.

So if prices don't go to higher levels than they were prior to the trade war what have we gained?
I ask this because this seems to be the way these things go. Try to fix a problem, then things get worse, in this case commodity prices. Then when they return to levels/prices pre fix, victory is declared.
What am I not seeing? I am not a Trump hater or supporter. This is just a trend I have noticed over the last couple years.

Well you can pay for the pork three times then, Once for the tariff, once for the foreign profits needed, once at the store and once for the subsidies that are paid out due to lower prices, oops that four I guess.

Do they pay the full tariff if they own the company/product?

Yes, tariffs are applied solely based on nation of origin and harmonized tariff product code. Ownership has no bearing. Now, there might be hidden tax breaks / subsidies along the way to make up for things like this, but officially the tariff applies.
