Son found a canoe, Tied to a tree, both floating down the river. Went up river several miles and never saw a soul. All weekend. Describe the rope, name the river, describe the canoe and he will get it back to you

don't it have a serial number on it?

I have found a few boats in the fall here trapping that were obviously blown away in the wind. I was able to give the registration number to my CO and he contacted the owner. One even gave me a $100 as reward money.

I have nothing clever to put here.

definitely get the hull number to the DNR see if they have a registration on it if not run a small add in the local paper as public notification , then it is yours.

A tied up canoe or boat would mean a hunter or someone enjoying the outdoors and just anchored the boat for the time being. People here walk in for a week or so and hunt/camp etc..

Reminds me of a canoe I "found" one spring years ago.

Typical high water spring, thought I'd take a little canoe trip through the marsh. Came upon this canoe way back in the cattails, not tied to anything, half full of water, also had half a dozen decoys in there and a few willow poles.
Judging from the debris and mud inside the canoe, I figured it spent the winter out there.

Tied it on to my canoe and paddled back to the put in. Dumped out the water and loaded found canoe into the back of the truck with dekes. My canoe went up on top.

Dropped it off at the local sportsman's club figuring someone would identify it and claim it. It set there for three weeks, then one day was gone.

So I inquired as to what happened to the canoe. Was told a local guy came and claimed it. Apparently he couldn't figure out why it was at the sportsman's club. I got the name and thought I'd at least pay him a visit and explain the situation.

Fella wasn't pleased at all I "rescued" his canoe. He wasn't cranky about it, just not the reaction I expected. Seems as though this is his post duck season game plan for his canoe. To leave it in the cattails. Not tied up, just adrift.

And so I see this canoe every winter I trap out there. Some years full of ice, some years less ice. Never in the same place. Must be where he last was while duck hunting.

Interesting.

Then there was the flood of '65. That is another story with all the loose canoes and skiffs that came downstream that spring.

Well looks like nobody on Tman knows who that canoe belongs to. greencountry here in KS you only register boats if a gas motor is going to be used. If there is a hull number we didn't find it anyway. Rivers are up here and the tree it was tied to washed in. So looks like it was left on the banks for awhile. Makes no sense to me not to pull something as light as a canoe up the bank. So I'm thinking a kid lost it.

Could be somebody's treasured canoe. I'd call the warden and at least get the ball rolling for the owner on recovery.

I'm going to agree with Muskrat on this. There might be somebody out there, maybe a trapper, that owns that canoe and it is precious to him, or her. I know I would be heartbroken if one of my boats wound up floating away and was gone for good. Check with the wardens and other law enforcement, maybe even put a lost/found ad in the newspaper or Craigs List with the same identification stipulations you put on here and give it some time.

If after all that, nobody claims it, enjoy the heck out of it with the clear conscience that you gave it your best try to find the owner.

Maybe Buster and Alvira Holstein was having a picnic and somehow a kid named Patrick mistook it for having drifted upstream and somehow go tied to a limb with a square knot. "They Shoot Canoes Don't They by Patrick McManus".
