Snowy, stay out please.
Been doing good plots for years and have made EVERY mistake in the book.
This year I decided to go all out and make sure I did it right. God helped with timely rains.
Just pulled these turnips / radished n rape plants today.
Lots of forage for late season bowhunting smile

Awesome! When did you get those planted? Are the deer feeding on the green leaves yet by you?

My phone has been blowing up with notifications from my trail camera the last couple weeks with the deer activity ramping up in our plots, but we got them in a little late and we won't get turnips and radishes anywhere near as big as yours. Maybe next year...

Also if you can let me know where you got the seeds for the one 2nd from the right, that would be great!

I love your first sentence!

Those look great. What was the planting date?

From what I understand, getting things planted late isn't a bad thing since a killing frost brings out the sugars in the plants. Then it'll look like someone went through the plot with a roto tiller!

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

The plants need enough time to develop the bulbs below the soil. If you plant too late, you will still get the green forage from the tops that will draw deer well once it freezes, and to some extent before it freezes depending on other available food sources. But a good crop of turnips and radishes like bucksnbears has will draw deer well after the tops have been mowed down by hungry deer.

I seeded July 25 as I've been doing for several years.
Seeds come from RJ Hunt com.
The perfect timed rains really helped and I think going overboard$$ on fertilizer also helped big time.
For the most part, deer have not been hitting them yet but should start hard after a hard frost.

Nice. I have tried the turnips before, but the deer here aren't used to them and they didn't really attract. However, bowhunting in Illinois around some plots, they love them.

Turnips have been big here the last several years it's weird to see a field of them and the cattle throwing the tops up so they can eat the bundle.

Roasted Turnip Recipe:
Instructions

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Toss together the turnips, butter, thyme sprigs, shallots, olive oil and some salt and pepper in a 13-by-9-inch baking dish. Roast until the turnips begin to soften, about 30 minutes. Adjust the seasoning and serve.

Jerry, don't the cattle eat the tops?
Tiguy. Middle plant s a Giant Rape. RJ Hunt co. Has them. They can get over 3' tall.
I've got 6 of these plots scattered out. All are doing fantastic but 1 that got semi drownded out but it's still purdy nice.
I also have oats n rye planted along side the brassicas and a few plots have pumpkins/ squash mixed in.
If the wolves stay away, late season bowhunting should be fantastic! smile

I think Turnips need to freeze or get frosted before the deer turn on them which could be why the southern deer did not like them. Someone more knowledgeable can confirm or dispel that though I am sure.

I have always heard that turnips, parsnips, carrots, probably most root crops , need a good frost, to sweeten them up. Good looking food plot. old 243

Ive planted brassicas for a long time. Whether deer target thebgreens before or after frost is dependent on the area. I adsume due to availability of other food sources. Ive seen the greens decimated by the end of September in north central PA. In north west PA they hardly touch them until mid November.

Turnips and radishes, they atypically leave them alone untill a hard frost
The giant rape seed they can pound as soon as they emerge but they keep growing..

Tiguy, don't even THINK of depleting my Hamms supply laugh up
