When making dirthole sets and using some lure, I use Q-Tips cut in half.

Shake up the bottle, stick the Q-Tip in to the bottom of the bottle and throw it down the hole.

Well today I got a order in the had some lure in it. This lure wasn't in the normal 1 oz. size boston type bottle. It was a wide mouth bottle.

Anyway it said to use a cap full of lure per set. I'm guessing my Q-Tip full isn't a cap full.

I was wondering if my Q-Tip is good enough or I'm not using enough lure?

I use a small twig and dip it in the lure about 1/4". (for fox, red and grey).

If a little bit helps, a whole lot has got to do more. All us lure makers agree, use more lure!

Very true, the more you use the more you have to get.

One oz bottle per set.

I generally use 1 qtip worth per lure. sometimes i might use 2 different lures but generally 1 qtip per smell. I use alot of liquid gland lure and i use 1/2 to whole dropper full, the dropper that fits on a 1oz bottle and i let it soak into wood stobs or the backing. Its probably too much but it doesnt hurt.

I know of a guy that put up some decent numbers and he was trying to find a way to use less. One drop was too much according to him.

Depends on how long you want to wait for a catch. Over-powering odor will degrade over time. You did not say what animal you are targeting. If you are targeting luremakers use a 4oz jar per set.

I'm sure i use to much lure and bait, but i'm not a fan of relureing and baiting. If I'm going to do that i want it to be on a remake. I'm sure a prairie dog tail would work but why not use a half of a prairie dog for bait. And i make and sell bait/lure . But i used the same amount back when i bought it too.

Let me sugar coat this

Except for very cautious coyotes generally more gets them to work the set more. But on the other hand you dont usually need them to work the set for 5 minutes to catch them. I do think coyotes can get an idea about how much of something is down a hole (especially bait) and sometimes large amounts create more of an interest. Put a little bit of fryer grease in a hole and a quart of it in another hole and you will see the difference.

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

Regarding how much to use, volume of meat bait is one thing, volume of compounded lure is another.

Cotton ball and ring it out to your pleasure just roll it tight against the wall of the bottle, don't be cheap if your going to do the work. I have had sets worked that were under the snow for months so a little will go a long way.
